The Prize

When Paul Bardoe at Futaba UK and Paul Gosling at Nexus Modelling Supplies heard of the efforts to set up a new model flying site at Stragglethorpe Corner, they contacted GDMAS to encourage them in their efforts, to indicate how pleased they were that a new model flying site was being created, and to offer their support to the projects. They have both very generously provided some very nice goodies and prizes that are being offered here to raise funds to help with the setup costs of Stragglethorpe. The prizes are:

From Futaba UK we have:

  • A Futaba Beanie hat;
  • A HITEC HS-485HB Deluxe Karbonite Gear servo;
  • A Radient 40 Amp ESC SBEC G2 (for 2-4 cells);
  • A Futaba 6K Transmitter and Receiver set.

From Nexus Modelling Supplies we have:

  • Two £50 Gift Vouchers, that can be used against any purchase from NEXUS.

Our club chairman has also had his arm twisted, and has agreed to donate two NiB models from his kit collection as part of the prize draw:

  • A Guillows Giant Scale F6F-3 Hellcat balsa kit;
  • A Hobbyking 63” Fieseler Fi 156 Storch balsa kit.

I hope you will all agree that there are some very attractive prizes in the draw, which are most definitely worth a punt, especially at only £3.00 per ticket. So please do put your hands in your pockets and have a go at winning them, with the added pleasure of knowing that you will be helping to sustain our hobby and sport going forward.

The prize draw will occur at Stragglethorpe Corner on Saturday the 4th of July 2026. Each of the eleven prize winners drawn will then enter a random draw to decide which prize they will win. The prizes will be posted to the winners the following week, or can be collected locally if required. The gift vouchers will be emailed to the respective winners.

The Cause

Grantham and District Model Aircraft Society (GDMAS) originally started life as the Grantham Zoomers back in 1947 and is probably one of the oldest model clubs in the United Kingdom. The club promotes, protects, organises, and encourages all types of model aircraft building, safe flying and development.

Unfortunately, in 2024, due to the changing security climate, the club lost access to the fabled RAF Barkston Heath site it had been using since 1961, has since been searching for a new location, and in late 2025 the club secured the long-term use of a beautiful flying site near the village of Fulbeck in Lincolnshire.

The club has sole access to this secluded site, 365 days of the year, and have since been busy preparing the access route, and cultivating, hoeing, and seeding the grass runways. The site covers approximately 4-acres, with a large east-west runway of approximately 750 feet by 90 feet, and a slightly shorter SSE-NNE runway of approximately 380 feet by 90 feet. There is also a large hard standing area, which we use for car parking, pits, pilot box, and foul weather flying if the grass is waterlogged. The site is currently suitable for radio-controlled flying disciplines and has a BMFA/CAA authorisation to fly up to 1500 feet for aircraft weighing a maximum of 25 Kg.

It is a fantastic site to fly from with the big Lincolnshire skies and balmy summer evenings, and the money raised from this prize draw will go to help with the not inconsiderable setup costs for the flying site.
