There must be an issue.
When you're dependent on anything, it's impossible to live a normal life. Only that object is on your mind. Not 'what exciting thing am I going to do today?' kind of thing. In this case, "what am I going to eat?" 'How am I going to spend my time today?' That's all there is to it. Nothing except that one thing.
Drugs and alcohol are that thing for roughly 300,000 people in the United Kingdom. In the course of our work at Staywell Derby, we are constantly confronted with the devastating consequences of drug and alcohol abuse. Our eyes and hearts are trained to notice the physical and emotional damage it inflicts on people.
It's a pain in the neck to be alive.
The bad news is that it doesn't have to last. As a result, our existence is based on this principle. Using our own life experiences of addiction, trauma and mental health we help people recover and reintegrate into their local communities, we're working to provide them with ongoing recovery support and a safe space to seek help. A path to a more open and connected way of living.
Is there a solution?
In order to recover from addiction, we believe that three elements are necessary:
Home
It's difficult to overcome addiction without a secure place to call home - a place where you can feel at ease and where you can identify. Too many people struggling with addiction end up in night shelters and hostels; often feeling unsafe and surrounded by other residents using and drinking. We are building relationships with housing providers to help people find a place to call home by providing them with a safe and secure environment. In a supportive home setting, people can build a solid foundation for their recovery.
Recovery
To overcome an addiction, self-reliance is not an option; instead, you need the help of others. What are the options for climbing out of this hole? When someone is in trouble and everyone can benefit from some support.
In order to assist individuals, deal with the realities of addiction and recovery, we provide Lived Experience led recovery groups, one to ones and social support. When it comes to dealing with difficult ideas and behaviours, these groups can be a true lifesaver.
Purpose
“Recovery is the best thing that happened to me, and finding somewhere to belong and feel safe was the biggest turning point." These are the words of one of the individuals that attend Staywell Derby for support, and they reflect the perspective of many people who are battling addiction. Having a safe space and purpose in life is the first step in overcoming an addiction.
We encourage people to find new, creative ways to use their time, including volunteering in the local community. We want to help people discover their skills and talents and use them to benefit the people around them.
Independence
What happens next, when you go to your own place, you realise you have to do this all by yourself; you have to stand on your own two feet. At this moment, far too many men and women who had been making progress in their recovery give up.
Those in recovery need to be able to make the transition to independent living as smoothly as possible. With the help of short-term recovery groups located in their neighbourhoods, we want to help them overcome the difficulties of living independently while in recovery with the help of other people in the same position as them.
Above all, we believe that individuals should be respected for who they are. We don't treat people as patients, clients, or problems to be solved.
What's the point of working with us?
Staywell Derby is a collective of individuals with lived experience, who are deeply invested in the people of Derby and in alleviating the plight of those who are struggling in life. We may have set up in the middle of lockdown but we have over 25 years of recovery under our belts.
Over the last couple of years, we have supported individuals in their own Recovery journeys, not only from addiction but also mental health, trauma and other adverse life experiences.
We are not a cash rich project but our passion, determination and stubbiness has helped each step along with way, as well as individuals with caring hearts we've been able to carry out our mission.
We want to raise £10,000 to help keep our doors open for all those that need our help, the funds will help support the safe space we have created, continuation of support groups, one to one wellbeing sessions, recovery support and much more.
Helping people is something we want to be doing for many years to come. In fact, with your help, we can accomplish this goal. Now is the time to make a donation so that we can assist even more individuals to build a long-term recovery.
We appreciate your help!
