Donate and help us stand up to draconian new policing laws.
The UK Government is pushing through its new Policing Bill. Together with its other draconian laws, this makes for the biggest attack on our rights in the UK in a generation.
The Bill's new measures could include:
- Up to 10-year prison sentences for protestors for “public nuisance"
- Drastic restrictions on protest organisers such as new police powers to arrest protesters who breach conditions they didn't even know about
- New Serious Violence Reduction Orders (SVROs), that allow police to stop and search some people whenever they are in public, which will disproportionately target racialised and marginalised communities
This is a grave threat to our right to protest.
Community organisers, grassroots movements and policy experts are fighting to remove some parts of the Policing Bill - like the threatened bans on 'noisy’ protest.
But as the Bill passes and becomes law, those same organisers and movements need to be equipped to face down the new protest and policing laws.
The Policing Bill will take the UK’s anti-protest laws from bad to worse. It gives the police even greater powers to suppress our fundamental right to protest and stand up to power.
People are facing a new, even more oppressive legal environment.
Everyone needs to be equipped to understand these changes, so that we can resist injustice and ultimately pave the way for a better future.
We all need to know our rights.
Liberty will produce a host of different materials, resources, workshops, training sessions and more to groups and individuals directly affected.
Our experienced Advice and Information team is working flat-out to produce a range of new materials that bring everyone up to speed with the new protest and policing laws and help them stand up for their rights. These include:
- training sessions, presentations, and workshops for grassroots campaigners and groups
- an updated, freely accessible online 'Know Your Rights' Hub
- 'bust cards' and other materials for activists ‘on the ground’
- translations and more to make everything accessible to everyone, no matter their background.
But we need to raise at least £17,500 to make this happen. And we need to act fast.
The Policing Bill could become law by the end of April. We need to work double-time to make sure we are all prepared to fight for our rights in the new legal reality.
