Torbay & District Deaf Society charity had been around for the past sixty-two years together with a board of Trustees. We are all unpaid deaf volunteers with safeguard accreditation to protect our members using Torbay Deaf Social Club. The charity started in 1963. The local deaf community have been active in Torquay for the last 90 years. In recent years we have been attracting members from wider areas of England and open to all visitors.
We have many deaf members with a wide range of other disabilities issues. The importance of wellbeing and valued as a person is the primary aim of the charity.
The first language is BSL (some of to us are bilingual.) We run six social groups to support our members. Social club, Skittles club, Church group, Senior Citizen hub, Youth club and Art/Craft group. We organised additional dedicated events, celebratory parties, outreach services, winter warm rooms throughout the year.
Our primary aim is to replace our ageing chairlift; this had been in operation for twenty-five years. On the last inspection the advisory note, advised now is the time to purchase a new chairlift.
The Trustees have arranged fund-raising events to raised funding.
Our main event on 28th June an eighteen miles sponsored walk, Haytor to Teignmouth following, the Templer way. This will take up to ten hours to complete.
(In 18th century when the Templer family, quarried granite for London construction/ building works and the charity will be following the same route from "moor to sea." We would appreciate any external supporters to walk with us and sponsors to fund raise with us.
The Trustees have reached out to Crowdfunding and the wider community to support us in reaching our target faster than we can do on our own.
Please come on board and help or join us in our events. We will be pleased to see you.
