Aim

The aim of our project is to refurbish our snooker club to make it more welcoming for our local community and more energy efficient.

Who are we?

The St Germans Snooker Club is a small, local club in South East Cornwall. It provides a place for young and old to participate in low level activity sport, in the form of snooker, billiards and pool. However, a key part of our club ethos is to enable people to meet and socialise in a safe and warm environment.  We have enrolled a team into our local Liskeard and District Snooker League for over 50 years and we want this to continue!

Why are we crowdfunding?

We are raising money to modernise the club so that it is a more inviting place and to make it more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. It has been neglected for many years and we want to refurbish it with a new cloth for the table, a new carpet and seats, new heating and a new ceiling so that is a warm and welcoming community space.

At the moment, the Snooker Club isn’t very hospitable because it is quite shabby and threadbare, and the cost of the heaters, which are old and inefficient, is expensive.

The room design means there is a large space above, open to the roof line, with no insulation, and so the heat just escapes. If we can modernise the Club, and fit new, energy efficient heating and a fully insulated ceiling, our costs will be greatly reduced and it will ensure that, moving forward, we are a viable and going concern. It will also mean that our energy and carbon footprint are brought in line with present day best practice.

If we can carry out this work it will help to increase the membership of the Club, especially young people. We have a small, but active membership with some younger players coming through and we need to encourage more of them by improving the facilities. We also want to provide a useful meeting space that can be used by other community groups.

By making the snooker club a welcoming place to meet we can encourage young people to come off the streets and away from playing computer games. This will enable them to interact and socialise with others, not only their peers but also older generations in the village, so they build relationships with different members of the community and learn from positive role models in terms of behaviour and comportment. The local Youth Club caters for children up to 16 but after this there is no regular activity or meeting place for them.

The Snooker Club is currently sustainable, but with the increase in electricity costs over the last two to three years, and the likelihood of them continuing to rise, we are concerned that without refurbishing the Club we may not be able to continue in the medium term.

How we’ll spend the money raised

We will use the money raised to:

Remove the old carpet, seating, heaters and table lighting.

Build a suspended and fully insulated ceiling.

Install new, energy efficient heaters, new carpet and new seats.

Redecorate the room and add secondary glazing.

Recover the table with a new cloth and new cushions.

Replace the table lighting with a new, energy efficient system.

Here's a digital image of what we're aiming for.

Community Impact

An average snooker player walks around 1,500 steps during a match of snooker and so this is an enjoyable way for older members of our community to get exercise and help maintain general fitness. The stretching and bending also helps keep you supple as you get older.

Research shows that playing snooker can boost wellbeing and self-confidence, and it can assist with overcoming mental health issues. We know that young people are struggling with their mental health and we think if we can encourage them to join our snooker club it will get them out and meeting people in a fun and friendly environment, enabling them to socialise and interact and boost their wellbeing.

Snooker helps to develop a host of mental skills and traits that are used in everyday life, such as concentration, the ability to calculate risk and the importance of being patient.

As a place where all age groups can interact, it can help build trust and understanding between generations and make individuals feel part of our community and understand their place in it.
