St George Bowls and Social Club: Restoring a Historic Clubhouse for the Future
St George Bowls and Social Club is a community-led plan to restore and reopen the historic Bowling Green and Pavilion in St. George Park, Bristol. With the aim of creating a welcoming, affordable social space built around casual lawn bowls, a small clubhouse café and bar, and community sauna & wellness sessions.
The site has huge potential and there is now an opportunity to bring it back into meaningful use for the community. The groundwork has been laid, the agreement to operate is in place and consultation has shown strong local support.
This Crowdfunder and the accompanying Taskforce Volunteer Call-Outs running alongside it, provide a chance for local people and businesses to support the project and contribute towards the essential refurbishment works that will allow the doors to open in Spring 2026.
What’s happening?
At its core, this is about reviving a historic sports facility and reshaping it for use by the local community today. The Upper Bowling Green will host relaxed sessions of lawn bowls, whilst the Lower Green will be open for members to sit and enjoy a coffee or a cold drink in the sun with friends. A covered area will be available for use by local groups and facilitators. At the end of the bowls season in October, the next phase of the site development will include the addition of saunas and cold plunges
The plan for the Clubhouse:
- A bright, comfortable clubhouse café and bar
- Flexible seating for socialising and community use
- Accessible toilets and improved facilities
- Storage and equipment to support casual bowls play
Alongside bookable bowls sessions, the space can also support:
- Social leagues and drop-in play
- Schools and youth sessions
- Daytime coffee and informal meet-ups
- Wellness mornings and small workshops
- A welcoming third space in BS5

Why this matters now
Across Bristol, affordable social spaces are disappearing. At the same time, more people are feeling isolated and many community buildings are struggling to stay viable. Green spaces like St George Park have never felt more important. This is where people walk, meet, reset and breathe. But while the park is full of life outdoors, the Clubhouse at its centre has been quiet for too long.
Revitalising it will create a low-barrier way for local people to play a sociable sport and access wellness facilities, creating a multi-generational space where people can connect through recreation all year round.
If we don’t act now, the building and site risks slipping further into decline. Instead this is our opportunity to re-build and reimagine an important, long-term community asset together.
How your support will be used
All money raised through this Crowdfunder will be used towards the set up and infrastructure costs for the Bowls Provision, Green Space and Clubhouse for the first phase of opening in Spring 2026.
Each individual or organisation who contributes to the Crowdfunder or the accompanying Volunteer Call-Out will have their names included on the Supporter Board. This will be on permanent display in The Clubhouse.
