Squash player’s road to become a professional

Aim

I need to engage in several tournaments in order to move up the ladder. That requires a travel & expense budget that is out of my reach.

My name is Theis Houlberg and I´m writing you with a request.

But first, let me tell you my story. I am a 20 year old athlete from Denmark and ever since I was a little kid, I had a dream: to become one of the world’s best squash players.

I played squash for the first time when I was about 10 years old. My dad was playing squash with his friend and I was sitting outside watching with great pleasure. I had a few hits myself and I liked it so much that I started training with other juniors. Obviously, at the start I wasn’t really good at it but that wasn’t the point. I enjoyed it so much that I eventually started training more and more and my dream was born.

For that reason, 1 year ago Í moved to Bristol, to train with one of the best coaches and play alongside with some of the world’s best players, and other players with the same dream as me.

Now I am a Bristol-based fulltime squash player who wants to take his game to the next level and become a professional. I have enjoyed every path that squash has taken me on, but I am now at a crucial stage of my career where money is a big factor. I moved to Bristol because I knew that the opportunities are better here than in Denmark. A year with a lot of good training and a lot of new experience has now passed and it is time for me to take it to the next level.

However, moving up the ladder takes a lot of sacrifices. When I started my new life in Bristol I was well aware that I was going to live on a tight budget and that I needed to work a lot besides my training. This brings me to my initial request. I don’t have the economy to travel around and play tournaments and that is why I need your help.

I have fought for the past 6 years and invested so much time to make my vision come true. 10 years ago I had the pleasure to watch my dad play squash and in the future I want my dad to have the pleasure of watching me play the big tournaments.

What is my request to you?

I am asking you to help out a guy who is very determined and who is willing to do whatever it takes to pursue his dream. I am not asking for thousands of pounds, but I would be very thankful for just a little help on my way to the top.

What will I give you in return?

This is literally the beginning of my journey and I want all of you to join me on it. At the moment, I can’t offer you anything but a place in my heart, and a seat to watch my journey.
