The Heatons Sports Club is a Community Amateur Sports Club based in Stockport. It plays a prominent and important role within the local community and brings friends, family, teammates and businesses together. The Sports Club provides four different sports and comprises of Heaton Moor RUFC, Heaton Mersey Cricket, Heaton Mersey Tennis and Heaton Mersey Lacrosse.
Each sport has a rich and colourful history and the variety of sports available ensure a diverse client base and dynamic and engaging atmosphere at the club. Each of the sports has burgeoning junior sections and established adult sections and, senior rugby aside, caters for all genders at all ages.
In addition to the main provision of sports, the club also offers bar, catering and conference centre facilities available to the whole community, whether members or non-members. The clubhouse facilities are made available at no charge for local charities and community organisations. The club also has strong ties with local primary and secondary schools and regularly sends coaches to deliver sessions in the schools and to assist with GCSE assessments.
Given the feedback, comments and support from local businesses and contributors since the Crowdfunder campaign began, it is obvious that the club is a key and recognised asset to the community for many across the Heatons.
- Why do we need to raise funds
It’s been a very lean 12 months for sporting and social activities at the Heatons Sports Club. Takings from the bar and catering have dropped significantly, club hire vastly reduced, usual fundraising events cancelled and the community backbone of the club have been left trying to deal with the shortfall. Members have been magnanimous during these difficult times and paid dues and subscriptions often with little in return, but cash flow has still suffered to the detriment of the club. To help inject much needed funds at this difficult time and to hopefully coincide with the reopening of the club for sports and activities, I‘m starting a fundraising campaign.
- How will the funds be spent
There are several projects under consideration and some essential maintenance and improvement work required in the grounds, club house, facilities and conference room and changing room areas. In addition to the essential upgrades the primary target of the fund-raising would be to provide a permanent covered outdoor social seating area and bar facility that can be used whatever the weather. The beer garden was a real saviour to the clubs business when it was allowed to open last summer however during rainy days the income dropped substantially. Having a permanent covered area or pergola would hopefully help protect this important source of income and provide an alternative space for meeting, training, sporting and social occasions even in inclement conditions.
We are asking for your donations, for your pledges, for your generous support to make this campaign a success! If you are a business within the community or further afield and want to get involved then please contact me, your assistance would be very much appreciated.
For my part and as an initial opener to the campaign I will undertake a running challenge and hope you will offer your backing not only to motivate me, but more importantly provide financial assistance to the club:
With thanks to Emma Wilkinson and Angela Lock for the above poster soon to be appearing across the local community.
My target will be to run on each consecutive day of March the date of the month in km. So starting on the 1st with 1km, to the 2nd with 2km, all the way through to the 31st March with 31km. If my maths is right that’s a total of 496km in the month! It's a daunting challenge and a very scary final 10 days of the month.
As the club is such a central part of the community, I would really like to see other people getting involved and starting their own fund-raising activity. You can become a fundraiser by using the 'Start fundraising' button on the Overview page. This function allows you to start up your own fundraising activity with the funds generated feeding into this cause and ultimately the club.
Thank you for taking your time to read this and please help, support and share if you can.
Crowdfunder is waiving its platform fees for community and charity crowdfunding projects during the coronavirus crisis. There is also the very real potential of receiving matching contributions from Sport England up to the value of £10,000!
