Spitting Pretty Caption Fundraiser

Aim

We are looking to raise funds to support the creative captioning of our new play Spitting Pretty performed as part of Voila! Festival.

HELLO

We are Eyes Wide Theatre a creative collaboration between Imogen Dowding and Eve von Elgg. We take a long hard look at taboos and explore them with new writing, bold physicalization and theatrical experimentation. Approaching everything with our Eyes Wide open. 

We are now putting a big focus on inclusivity and accessibility within live performance. Finding ways of integrating access tools into the theatricality of the piece. This is at the forefront of our new show Spitting Pretty. We aim to keep learning and finding ways to make the work we care about accessible to as many people as possible and enhancing the work we make in doing so.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

Currently we are raising funds for our new one woman show, 'Spitting Pretty'. A show about forbidden desires and the power of living in a dream. If you could invent, or become, the perfect woman, who would she be? What starts as a comic exploration of the bizarreness of modern sexual relationships quickly spirals into a gut-wrenching inspection of the morality of fantasy.

This is a stripped down piece which showcases the power of a single storyteller through changing physicality, poetic language and the use of creative captioning.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?

The creative captioning is such an important part of this show, not only as a key access tool but also to aid the design and theatricality of the piece. Just because a theatre show has a focus on access doesn't mean it shouldn't be integral still to the story telling. Captions are so important and an incredible tool for those who are hard of hearing and/or D/Deaf, but also for neurodivergent people. They allow all audience members to understand and follow the story and pick up on nuances that may otherwise be missed. 

WHY DONATE?

In order to do this successfully, we need your help in raising funds so we are able to work with someone who is experienced and skilled in creating captions for theatre, incorporating it into the design element also. Furthermore, captioning even a 45 minute show will create over 1000 cues, for each line or phrase to be projected onto the stage. This is all done manually by a stage technician and is a huge undertaking. This person will need to become familiar with not only the script but also the actors mannerisms and speech patterns, so as to caption the show accurately. This person absolutely will need and deserve to be paid so we are also raising funds for that.
