I am raising funds to pay for the printing of 2000 156-page books about Hull's inimitable, alternative nightclub - SPIDERS.
Spiders - Tales From Behind the Web
My project is a full-colour, 156-page book, called 'Spiders - Tales From Behind the Web', which comprises dozens of personal, insightful and often very funny anecdotes from former and current members of Hull's extraordinary, alternative nightclub – Spiders.
Spiders Nightclub has been in existence since 1979, and some of the stories date back to the very origins of the club, creating a fascinating picture of some of the memorable characters the club has seen; the changing fashions, and the cultural significance of the club, taking the reader on a journey right through to the present day, encapsulating the very essense of the club, and why it has remained so popular for nearly forty years.
My book will be the first of its kind about Spiders, and, with Hull being the current City of Culture, I think it's important that Spiders Nightclub is celebrated, for thousands of indigenous Hull people have passed through said club, coming out the other side as life-long devotees of Spiders Nightclub. And I think it's about time some of those people's voices were heard, as Spiders has become more than just club to countless former and current members - it is a monument to community; a celebration of shared experiences; and a place where people create life-long friendships and romances.
I began to create my book in April 2016, having posted a hundred of my 1980s black and white Spiders' photographs on Facebook. The Facebook images proved to be so popular, and brought so many former and current members together, that I thought a book about Spiders was called for, having read how much affection countless people had for the club. I want my book to serve as a legacy for one of the most fascinating alternative nightclubs, not only in Hull, but in the UK.
I am a former member of Spiders, and somebody who spent a number of years going to the club during the 80s and early 90s. I was extremely passionate about the club back then, and have witnessed how the current members share the same enthusiasm and passion for the club as I once did.
The money I'm asking for will be spent on printing, marketing and distributing my book.
Naturally, anybody backing my project will be rewarded, of course. I am offering numerous rewards: a set of ten postcards, an A2 poster (420 x 594mm) a signed copy of my book, or the opportunity for you to have your name included in my book in the acknowledgements' page.
With your help, I'll be able to create my book, and help to share the magic and fascination of Spiders, which is one of the gems in Hull's cultural crown jewels.
