I want to bring fun, quality bias binding to sewists everywhere, using special "on the bias" designs printed on quality cotton fabrics.
Home sewing is on the rise, people across the globe are making clothes that make them feel fabulous! And there's great joy in adding those little finishing touches to a handmade garment that being you joy everytime you pick them from your wardrobe (or floordrobe) to wear them.
But why just limit those finishing touches to labels? Bias binding is such a fun way to add a flash of colour to the inside of a garment, whether at the neckline or on a hem - but why not add some fun, cute, affirmative or loving words too?
I'm Laura a.k.a The Specky Seamstress and I recently started making my own bias binding and I fell in love with the result. Having tired a bit of the scratchy, crisp or fray-y shop bought stuff, particularly on more delicate fabrics, I was suddenly searching through my fabric stash for designs that were appropriately "biased" - but struggled to find any. So I spent a few evenings working on a design that I could use to print some fabric that would be perfectly suited for the purpose - scaled and angled exactly so it could be cut into bias strips and made into quality binding for my garments. And when I hit the nail on the head I wanted to share it with the world!
This crowdfunder is all about bringing that first design to reality, and enabling me to design and print more designs to add to the range. If successful, I'll be able to buy enough fabric to make into bias to fulfill all the crowdfunder rewards and some stock to start trading! The bias tape will be 12mm wide, perfect for neckbands and hems. If successful, I'll also be able to purchase the tools and equipment to help the process right from design through manufacture and right through to packaging and shipping. It'll help me set up a website that will allow for all my "Specky Seamstress" activities to be in one place - including vlogs and tutorials all about the bias tape!
My vision would be to release new designs in different widths so the bias tape will be great for garment sewists and quilters alike! As the business builds is love to be able to sell the bias tape to individuals and to sell them in small quantities to shops. I'd also love to be able to offer a custom order option in the future, so businesses could add a branded touch, or to use in goodie bags at sewing events! And I'll show you how to make your own, if you'd prefer, and you can buy the fabric yourself direct from my Spoonflower storefront.
All of my packaging will be made from recycled paper. I'll be researching and sourcing the most environmentally friendly fabrics I can for the product. I also aim to offer a "stock" product which will be made from fabrics leftover from other purposes. These will not be designed by me, but will be specially chosen for designs that work best on the bias tape. If you are an organisation who may have deadstock suitable for this purpose please get in touch.
