Aim

London is meant to be a creative hub but high rents are squeezing us out! Help us create a free space for the ancient art of storytelling.

We are so grateful to everyone who has pushed us past our first target!

All your donations from now on will go helping us run Space For Storytelling for longer than  twelve months. After the first year we will hopefully be getting some  serious momentum going and we definitely don't want to run out of money  at that point!

Our project:

London is supposed to be a hub of arts and culture - but our indie and grassroots spaces are closing around us as rents go sky high. Low income and marginalised artists suffer most. How can artists thrive without space?

London's venues, rooms, opportunities are vanishing around us as the cost-of-living crisis bites. SPACE FOR STORYTELLING will partner with The Bridge at Waterloo and offer:

*A free after-work space to learn and network in a disability-positive venue.

*Free workshops for anyone who uses spoken word or storytelling as part of their practice.

*Paid opportunities for artists at all levels including apprenticeships.

*Outreach storytelling performance opportuities.

*A free venue to perform longer pieces to a live audience.

*A central London location.

*Welcoming The Bridge community, many of whom have experienced homelessness or are refugees.

*Welcoming low income and otherwise disadvantaged storytellers and listeners.

*This project builds on our previous work with storytelling co-operative, see below. We are very proud of what we have built already.*

Why you can trust us:

In 2022, thanks to 102 dedicated supporters, we established Storytelling Co-Op, a brand new storytelling club. We are proud to have delivered everything we promised:

*A monthly free, wheelchair-accessible room for storytellers to practice.

*Welcoming an audience who are diverse in age, ethnicity, income, gender, nationality, background and experience.

* London's 'storytelling scene' has benefited from a joyful injection of enthusiasm and opportunity.

* We have inspired our storytellers with three distinguished guests (pic above Sandra Agard Hon FRSL)

?*We helped up-and-coming storytellers get thir first paid gigs.

"(story co op) is a wonderful space that means so much to me, I love the community there and I'm so inspired and uplifted by going."

*SPACE FOR STORYTELLING will support storytellers, actors, authors, stand-ups, poets and anyone who uses spoken word storytelling as part of their practice.

It will use a room that is step-free and has a wheelchair accessible toilet. It will benefit artists at all stages in their careers especially*

  • beginners,
  • low income and
  • disadvantaged/untapped

Artists will be paid a fair rate for their work and also have a place to learn and try new things. Let's carve a place in the heart of London to learn, celebrate and share the powerful art of storytelling!

With your help, we can become a beacon and inspiration for other artist groups in the UK and beyond.

We will NOT be squeezed out of the city.
