Southwell had a problem - our old skatepark wasn't fit for skating anymore! It was tired, run-down and parts of it were broken. It wasn't usable by everyone in our community, and it wasn't a safe environment for young people, and skaters of all ages, to socialise and build their skating skills.
Southwell Town Council and The Friends of Southwell Parks had a vision of a better skatepark for our town, one that would cater to skaters of a range of ages and abilities. We consulted with the community and worked with Betongpark to come up with a design that suited the location of the current skatepark. The new designs include a range of durable, concrete ramps and half-tunnels that will provide a place to meet and skate for years to come. We want it to be a safe and welcoming place for people of all backgrounds - skating can include our whole community.
The new skatepark will sit right next to the leisure centre and The Minster School, on Town Council owned land, meaning that people won't need to travel (often by car) to Farnsfield anymore to have a worthwhile skating experience. The skatepark plans aren't endangered by the proposed changes to the leisure centre either. These skatepark designs also provide a safe, well lit, open space for socialising so that young people from across our area can make use of the new facility and build new friendships.
People have fond memories of the old skatepark, and we want to guarantee that people can continue to engage in skating as a sport within our rural community. Skating is a brilliant social network within the Nottinghamshire area, with SkateNottingham (www.skatenottingham.co.uk) providing advice, support and training to many keen skaters. They also share our vision for the Skatepark and will, no doubt, be able to make use of it and engage a whole new generation of skaters.
The groundwork has begun, the old skatepark is already dismantled and we are on the edge of a new era of skating in Southwell. But, the plans can only reach their fullest potential if the community throw their weight, and some generous donations, behind the project. In order to have all of the features that we want within the Skatepark, and access extra funding from Sport England, we need local people to give whatever they can to help us reach our funding goal. If we manage this and Sport England approves our application, Sport England will match our funding, meaning that we can build the Skatepark to the full spec as a social and wheel-based sports hub for our town . The full plans include scope for bikes, scooters, boards and even those who just want to watch.
1. Make a pledge. Don’t delay if you’re going to support us because momentum is key to our success!
2. Spread the word. Share our project on your social media pages and tell the world to get behind us! The more people we reach, the more support we will get.
3. Offer rewards. Get involved if you are a local business by donating things we can offer to our supporters. We will give you a shout out!
4. If you want to run your own fundraiser to support us, maybe a sponsored activity or similar, use the 'contact project' button at the top of our page to let us know. Setting up your own page only takes a few minutes and you won’t need any bank details. Just a fun idea!
If you donate a pre-set amount, you might even be in with a chance of claiming a reward from a local business: However, be warned, once the rewards are gone, they're gone!
This crowd-funder will specifically work towards the pool steps and bowl corner - additional elements of the skatepark that mean it can attract a diversity of skaters of varying abilities.
We already have so many community members to thank for their kind donations and offers of help - Friends of Southwell Parks (without whom this project wouldn't exist), A & V Squires Plant Company and every wonderful business that offered a reward, among others.
Help us invest in Southwell's future, get people active and put Southwell skating back on the map. Please give generously if you can.
All rewards are COLLECTION ONLY within the Southwell area. Please contact Jamie Bostock (07758444224) to arrange a suitable collection place and time within Southwell. Age restricted products will be subject to checks of a VALID PHOTO I.D. upon collection.
