To bring theatre back - in all its forms - for the people of Southwark and the surrounding area.
Up to 16 March when all indoor theatre stopped, Southwark Playhouse successfully ran 2 theatres and a rehearsal room at its Newington Causeway site - presenting a wide range of plays, musicals and community projects. Southwark Playhouse has been at the heart of its local community in Southwark for the last 25 years, but receives no regular subsidy or grant funding, so earned income was reduced to nothing at that point.
We want to adapt our larger theatre to comply with the government's social distancing and live performance criteria and get theatre going again. We will add screens and re-fit the auditorium creating seating for 110. Ventilation in the space will be improved and where possible we will live stream performances to increase access of those able to see productions. We will also take steps to make our rehearsal room a safe, socially distanced space so we can invite back our community groups: our 2 young companies; our elders company and our people's company - as well as a wide range of local projects that receive help in kind with free rehearsal/ workshop/ performance space and regard the theatre as their home from home.
Support from the Aviva Community Fund will enable us to bring theatre back to Elephant and Castle. And, most importantly, to start reuniting our community.
