Aim

Our objective is to construct covered driving range bays to provide all weather practice facilities

Who are we?

South Staffordshire Golf Club was established in 1892 to promote and provide access to golf for members, visitors and societies. Beyond golf, we are also a community hub with our facilities used by organisations such as Rotary, 41 Club, Soroptimists, BNI Business, as well as a community venue for weddings, birthday parties, christenings and wakes. We are a not-for-profit organisation owned by the members and run by the members. We have over 80 social members who do not play golf, but use the clubhouse to socialise and meet friends and family.

We offer junior membership for £1 per week and we have developed an affordable pathway membership for women new to golf which includes coaching and mentoring as part of our commitment to the “Women in Golf” charter developed by the R&A.

Why are we crowdfunding?

In addition to coaching juniors and women new to golf, we provide coaching to local schools at our practice facilities. However, we do not have covered driving range bays and, as such, our facilities are at the mercy of inclement and unpredictable british weather.

In particular this makes scheduling group lessons with Schools difficult due to their fixed timetables if there is poor weather.

By constructing covered driving range bays we will be able to provide all weather practice facilities and assured availability, which is particularly important for juniors and women beginners as well as our school partners.

However as a sporting club we simply do not have the funds to develop this essential asset without both your support and matched grant funding from Sport England.

How our project will be United by Birmingham 2022

We are located in Wolverhampton and a number of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games events were based in our city. We are proud to support the objectives of the 2022 games to provide a sporting legacy and to unite communities. We are committed to increasing access to golf as a lifelong social and sporting activity. In particular, we are focussed on bringing more juniors into golf and also supporting and sponsoring increased access for women who represent less than 20% of golfers in the UK.

How we’ll spend the money raised

Funds raised will be used to construct a permanent all weather practice facility which will have a teaching bay and 8 additional bays. We do not need planning permission and we have identified and agreed pricing with a contractor and we plan to have the facility available by late autumn if our fund raising is successful. We are targeting to raise £21,000 from fund raising which will be augment by £9,000 matched funding from Sports England.

Community impact

The all weather practice facilities will enable us to attract and support new junior and women golfers, as well as further develop our relationships with local schools. Our goal is to provide a pathway to golf for our community and unlock the health and well-being benefits that golf provides as a lifelong sporting and social activity. Golf provides juniors with a sense or purpose and belonging and is both a physical and mental challenge. It builds self discipline, focus and social skills which are essential life skills beyond the golf course.
