SOS Silence Of Suicide

RCN 1175795, Leamington Spa

Our aim is to eradicate the shame, stigma and silence which can prevent beneficial conversations about mental health. We support children and adults who are facing emotional health challenges via our phone line, online meetings and face to face meetings. In 2021, we had almost 27000 calls into our support line.

We began our journey to help others in 2015 and have come so far, supporting thousands of people along the way.

Originally, hosting face to face meetings where people who were struggling and vulnerable could come and sit, listen and/or talk about their feelings, their journey, their experiences with poor mental health and suicide.  Some of our meetings hosted over 300 people and we hope to be out and about again as soon as possible hosting more of these invaluable meetings.

Watch and listen about the devastating impact suicide has on those left behind:

The impact of Covid meant we opened a phone support line, which provides support to children and adults struggling to cope.  Our line received over 27000 calls into it during 2021 and our volunteers donated over 12000 hours of their time to help support those who needed it.

Our aims remain the same today as in 2015, to help eradicate the shame, stigma and silence that can inhibit healthy and beneficial conversations about mental health in general.  We also want to empower people, give them the confidence to believe in themselves and in a future that can be bright and positive, whilst never diminishing their thoughts and feelings.

Of the 27000 calls that came into us, just over a quarter were processed.  Because for every one volunteer on the phone lines, we need another 6 to ensure safeguarding, compliance and volunteer welfare too.  This is a huge amount of human resource and we simply do not have enough.  Everyone at SOS multi-tasks to ensure our service users get the very best, and safest service they deserve.

Funding for smaller charities is hard to find and sometimes even harder to obtain.  So please, choose SOS to nominate for any fundraising schemes you see, or feel free to fundraise yourself.  Every single penny ensures we continue to help others whilst sustaining and developing our services.  We MUST help more people this year.

Thank you for reading and supporting SOS x
