Soma Skincare - From Kitchen Dreams to Feel-Good Luxury

From the dining room of my mums home, also my childhood home, and the birthplace of my first child, the air thick with the scent of lavender rhubarb castille soap and amber dreams, and me, elbow-deep in cocoa butter, whipping up body custard like a mad alchemist. This is where Soma Skincare was born. Not in a gleaming factory, but in my mums dining room, driven by a passion to create natural, luxurious products that make everyone feel like they’ve just stepped out of a spa. My name is Mikachu, and this is the story of how my love for crafting amazing-smelling skincare for friends and family spiralled into a dream too big for my mixing bowls and my wallet.

It all started with a simple idea: everybody deserves some feel good. I’ve always been obsessed with scents. You know, those magical whiffs that transport you to a childhood holiday, a long gone penny sweets shop, or a summer when everything was perfect. I wanted to bottle that joy, using only natural, eco-friendly ingredients that love your skin as much as your nose.

So, I began experimenting, blending cocoa butter and jojoba oil for a velvety body custard, infusing castille and elderflower into a gentle body wash, and crafting fast-absorbing body oils with grapeseed and a dash of nostalgia. My first “customers”? My mates and family, who couldn’t get enough of my Skin Sap body oil (think pear drops and vanilla fudge) or the Grown Ups body custard that smells like that hypnotising perfume our mums used to wear.

Word spread faster than gossip at a family reunion. My besties dad demanded a SET of everything I had to offer for himself and his wife. My aunt, a boomer who swore by plain soap, became obsessed with Vanilla Smoke Saueaky Scrub. Even my neighbor’s teenager begged for Pink Lava Shimmer Sap to “slay their skincare routine.” Suddenly, my kitchen was a full-on production line, with jars teetering on every surface and my mum giving me side-eye for hogging the tables and counter. Friends started calling me “the mmm smellies queen,” which, let’s be honest, sounds like an erotic royals name.

But here’s the rub: crafting these luxurious goodies isn’t cheap, especially on my shoestring budget. I’m a one-woman show, mixing, bottling, and labelling by hand while juggling a low-income job that barely covers feeding 2 huge boys (ouch). The demand skyrocketed—friends of friends, colleagues, even my local shopkeeper wanted in! I was thrilled, but my bank account was screaming, “Mate, we’re out of cocoa butter funds!” Ingredients like organic castille soap and essential oils cost a pretty penny, and my trusty wooden spoon can’t keep up with the orders. I tried to stretch every pound, but when your mixing bowl is more patchwork than stainless steel, you know it’s time for help.

With your support, I can buy professional equipment (mixing vats, bottling tools, maybe a printer that actually prints the colours its supposed to) and source sustainable ingredients to keep the feel good flowing. I’m asking for £5500 to cover raw materials, eco-friendly packaging, and a small workspace to save my mum’s sanity. Equipment, supplies, ingredients donations? You’d be my hero forever!
