Society For Storytelling

RCN 1052038,

The SfS exists to advance the knowledge of the art, practice and value of oral storytelling, and the oral traditions of all the peoples and cultures of the world by actively promoting the exploration and sharing of stories whether locally, regionally or internationally, formally or informally.

National Storytelling Week: a celebration of our shared heritage.

Let’s keep the stories alive!

Sharing our stories and using those stories to help us make sense of the world around us strikes to the very heart of what it is to be human: in these especially traumatic times, storytelling is more important than ever and can be a vital route to establishing community, communication and mental wellbeing.

The Society for Storytelling was founded in 1993 by a small group of dedicated enthusiasts who wanted to help preserve the most ancient of human arts, traditional oral storytelling. The SfS is a registered charity which has always been managed entirely voluntarily. It exists to support and promote storytelling, to mentor young tellers as they begin their journey into the world of story and to provide a welcoming, nurturing, fun community for tellers everywhere.

Every year, the SfS coordinates National Storytelling Week. Schools, care homes, libraries and a host of other institutions and individuals up and down the country engage in a huge range of events to celebrate the power of story. To help with this, we produce comprehensive resource packs full of fun activity ideas, telling tips, sound tracks and videos. Producing these packs takes many hours of work by our lovely members and trustees, all given voluntarily. However, there are always costs and overheads to be met.

With the devastating effects of the pandemic still ripping through our community, finances have been a real worry for many of us. The SfS depends entirely on membership subscriptions and donations and these have been understandably much reduced over the last couple of years. All of which, sadly, means that we are struggling to continue with NSW. In order to ensure that it will carry on and grow as it should, we are asking our friends and supporters across the world for a little extra help via this crowdfunder.

Please spare whatever you can; every pound helps. Your donations go directly to making sure the SfS continues to thrive and to fulfil its vital mission of protecting our wonderful, rich oral heritage.
