MEI Theatrical produces world-class children’s theatre across the UK and internationally.
COVID abruptly caused the closure of all theatres across the UK, and around the world, effectively bringing our industry to a stop. MEI shows ceased and our 24 cast and crew were left without jobs.
Currently, theatres in the UK can only reopen with socially distanced performances of no more than 30% of their seats on sale and COVID safe measures in place. To date, approximately 25% of UK theatres have reopened or plan to this year. Most theatres are looking to Spring 2021 before they plan to reopen but unfortunately, some have closed for good and those who plan to reopen may not survive until next year especially with the restrictive measures affecting the ability to operate as normal.
MEI is returning to UK theatres at the end of October and has 10 weeks of socially distanced performances scheduled until March 2021. We want to lead by example and prove that the arts can endure this crisis by producing our shows and give employment to our teams.
With as little as 30% of seats available to sell we are looking for funding to help subsidise the reduced capacities at the venues to ensure our survival and with it the ability to continue to introduce children to the arts.
