We want to support the female Sierra Leone national team to race in the Tour du Burundi (November 2024)

Project by Sierra Leone Cycling Foundation

What we're fundraising for...

We are currently seeking support to send the female Sierra Leone national team to the Tour du Burundi, taking place on 8th – 17th November, 2024. We’ve secured the funding to cover the flights to Burundi from Team Africa Rising but need £3000 to cover remaining costs such as training camps, preparation to travel, national team kit, bike repairs and race entry fees.

This is an incredible opportunity for Sierra Leone to have female representation in an internationally acclaimed race. As the only stage (multi-day) race in East Africa, our young Sierra Leonean female riders have an opportunity to experience the level up in racing and develop into a highly competitive female national team on the continent.

The promotion of female sport is essential if we are to empower women in Sierra Leone and take the position of one of the most influential African nations in the promotion of equality and women’s participation in sports.

Cycling in Sierra Leone

There is a growing cycling community in Sierra Leone with rapidly increasing participation and greater access to competitive cycling. Currently, the sport of bike racing centres around the northern town Lunsar, home of Sierra Leone's most prominent cycling event the Tour de Lunsar.

Sierra Leone Cycling Foundation

Together with our Sierra Leonean partners, our experience, expertise and strong connections to the community mean SLCF are well positioned to support cycling in Sierra Leone. We have an excellent opportunity, with your help, to support and promote a sport which has been hugely positive in disenfranchised young peoples' lives and drive forward participation and competitive cycling across the country and beyond. SLCF  supports cycling across the country in other towns and cities through racing, formation of clubs, access to bikes and parts and distribution of kit and resources.
