The Cause
Prickles in a Pickle is a hedgehog rescue charity based in South Devon. We are run entirely by volunteers and each year we are seeing the numbers of hedgehogs we take in increase. Last year it was over 1300. We currently operate out of our founder's home but we have run out of space! We are fundraising to build a new hedgehog hospital where we can take more hedgehogs , offer better facilities to the sick and injured we are nursing and also be able to take in more placements like Duke of Edinburgh awards students, as we believe that educating and engaging with the younger generation is the way forward to save our wildlife.
Daily we receive calls from the public who have found a sick or injured hedgehog, we arrange for our transport team to bring the hedgehog to us from the finder, where it will be properly assessed and a plan for its hospital stay will be drawn up. The average hedgehog costs us £40-£50 , that is without trips to the vets for xrays etc. So you can see with 1300 hedgehogs thats a huge running cost.
We need to boost our funds to be able to take this dedicated and essential charity onto the next stage which is to have a larger specially designed hospital.
Hedgehogs are the nation's favourite wild mammal and are in massive decline and are now classed as endangered. With hospitals like ours and education and engagement from the public it's not too late to turn this around.
We thank you for taking part in this amazing prize draw and wish you the best of luck.
Judy, Alan and all the volunteers
