Aim

To raised much needed funds to externally restore the old Argyle School, back to it's original beauty and granduer.

The Shahjalal Islamic Centre and Masjid, nestled in the heart of Ipswich, holds within its walls a rich tapestry of history, faith, and community. Established in 1994 as a registered charity, this sacred place has been a beacon for the local Muslim community and the wider community of Suffolk.

The journey of our Masjid is one of growth, transformation, and resilience. In its early days, the old Masjid on St Helens Street served as a humble space for worship. However, as the Muslim population in Ipswich and Suffolk flourished over the years, the limitations of the old premises became evident. It could accommodate only 150 worshipers, lacked the space for female worshipers to have their own private area, offered limited services for the youth, and had minimal parking.

In response to the growing needs of our community, we embarked on a mission to secure a new home. This led us to the iconic old Ipswich Boarding School on Argyle Street. The move was monumental, transforming our capacity to accommodate just shy of 1200 worshipers, providing a dedicated space for female worshipers, offering comprehensive youth services, and generous parking facilities. We also created conference rooms and office spaces available for rent, opening our doors to the broader community.

Yet, the story doesn't end here. The historic Argyle School building, dating back to 1872-3, carries a legacy of its own. It stands as one of the first four Board Schools in Ipswich, born out of the 1870 Education Act, which marked a significant shift in the provision of education in Britain. Designed by the locally based architect Henry Medgett Eyton, the building's striking architecture showcases prominent triangular brick gables, arches framing its windows, and original timber window frames that have stood the test of time.

The significance of this building is not just architectural; it is a testament to the social values of its time and serves as a landmark in Ipswich. However, being in a conservation area and locally listed, we are limited to restoration rather than renovation. The costs of preserving this historical gem are substantial, reaching into the hundreds of thousands.

As we look to the future, we are faced with the challenge of preserving this architectural masterpiece and the vibrant community that calls it home. The day-to-day running of the Masjid depends solely on the generosity of our congregation, and the burden on our worshippers has grown heavier, especially in the face of the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Hence, we reach out to you, our extended community, to join us in this endeavour. We are crowdfunding to raise the necessary funds to restore this building to its original beauty and grandeur. Your support will not only preserve history but also enable us to continue our mission of serving the spiritual and communal needs of Ipswich and Suffolk.

As we embark on this journey to restore and sustain our beloved Masjid, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who share in our vision. Together, we can preserve history, build community, and ensure that the Shahjalal Islamic Centre and Masjid remains a place of worship, learning, and unity for generations to come.
