To cover our living costs whilst we are long-term volunteers at the Help Refugees warehouse, which provides supplies to 16,000 refugees.
We have recently arrived in Thessaloniki, Greece, and jumped straight in by volunteering in the Help Refugees warehouse. This warehouse is the main hub for the region; in terms of both donations & distribution and providing coordination between the different projects and various groups active in the 23 camps in northern Greece.
As can be imagined, the warehouse is alive with activity; but there is a constant demand for volunteers. (That's where we come into the story!) After just a few days in the warehouse, we realised that we no longer wanted make a trip home for Christmas, that we were in it for the long haul! We are needed here.
We are very lucky to have no ties or commitments at home. We can give ourselves and our time. Our daily activities may seem repetitive or arduous, from an outsiders perspective; but we know with every jumper we sort, or screw we fix, we are making a real difference to a human being.
We are working with amazing, inspiring and motivated individuals on some incredible projects. For example , we have been building and installing insulated floors to literally lift families off the freezing ground with The Get Sh*t Done Team.
The refugee crisis is not going to go away; people are still displaced and living in frustratingly terrible conditions. We appreciate that many people would like to do their bit to help in this humanitarian disaster, but can't up and leave home so easily. We can.
We are asking for your support to help us cover our basic living costs whilst we are volunteering. The more money we manage to raise, the longer we can sustain our volunteering, the more refugees we can support over the winter months.
Thank you for reading.
