ShelterNI

RCN 100767,

Established in 1980, we have been campaigning to combat homelessness and poor housing. We also provide services, such as SLATE that offers accommodation to young homeless people aged 16-25 in Omagh and multiple services at GABLE, that supports older and disabled people in the North West. ShelterNI

At Shelter NI, we are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of homeless young people, as well as older and disabled individuals. Through our SLATE and GABLE projects, and our Refugee Housing Support Service, we provide essential services and support to those in need. Additionally, we actively campaign to combat homelessness and advocate for lasting change.

Currently record numbers of households are finding themselves homeless. Homelessness can happen to anyone for a range of reasons, most often because people cannot afford the rent or mortgage they have been paying, or their home is no longer useable or because of family or relationship breakdown or simply because there is a lack of suitable housing available.

Homelessness is not just about people who end up sleeping on the streets. Many homeless people are unknown- they rely on the generosity of friends and family for somewhere to stay. Those households who are accepted as homeless by the authorities face long stays in temporary accommodation, including in certain situations, less suitable B&Bs or hotels. In each case the experience of homelessness is very traumatic on single adults, and families with and without children. Children who must suddenly move far away from where they have been living have the added disruption caused to their schoolwork.

We at Shelter NI would like to build on the campaigns and the services we have been doing for the last 40 years and, we depend on public generosity for our very existence.

This year we have continued to expand our activities, and we need your help to continue with this work. Therefore, could I please ask you for a donation to help support our ongoing work in combating homelessness in our community?

Your support will:

  • Allow us to refurbish a home: when a tenant moves on or leaves our programme, we will refurbish the property. This involves buying towels, microwave, kettle, plates, cups, cutlery, towels, bedding etc
  • Continue our helping hands project: this service is a vital resource for helping elderly people. We provide items such as handrails which helps keep tenants mobile and living independently in their own homes.

By donating to ShelterNI, you're not just funding a business; you're changing lives and helping provide critical support to more people in need.
