Who are we?
We are Sheriff Hutton Bridge Cricket Club. Based 9 miles north of York, we are an ECB Clubmark accredited club and thriving member of the ECB Yorkshire Premier League. We promote a strong family feel providing the opportunity for cricket to be enjoyed across all age groups and maintaining facilities across two grounds.
We have 4 senior teams playing at weekends and a wonderfully vibrant Junior Section welcoming boys and girls of all ages & abilities to play cricket. We run Junior Sides at U9, U11, U13 and U15 age groups as well as hosting Rockets Cricket for the very youngest. We also have our Girls section for the ages of 8-11 years old.
The club promotes a high standard of cricket both on and off the field, and we are fortunate to have developed players to represent England and Yorkshire CCC at both Junior and Full Senior Level.
Why are we crowdfunding?
The primary objective of this project is to expand sporting and physical activity opportunities for the rural communities of Sheriff Hutton and surrounding villages. There are over 20,000 young people living within a 5-mile radius of the club where there are no other cricket clubs with junior sections, so access to such facilities is limited e.g., our locality experiences deprivation in terms of community facilities. This is evidenced by our ranking in decile 1 and decile 2 respectively for barriers to service and living environment.
Similarly, there are no opportunities for girls and ladies’ cricket in the area, something that through this project we’d like to address. We have been playing on our site since we were established in 1949, providing (and continuing to provide) a strong community focus that involves our local community in many ways.
In 2020 we merged with Sheriff Hutton Cricket Club (SHCC), leading to us adopting a second ground, and increased membership. Although this was positive for the club, it has put additional pressure on our net facilities, something SHCC didn’t have.
Since then, we have gone from strength-to-strength, catering for over 150 male and female cricketers across various age groups, however, the growing demand for cricket exceeds our capacity due to insufficient training infrastructure, leading us to turning away new users or adding them to our waiting lists! For example, at the present time we have several U9’s, U11’s and U13’s on a waiting list ready to join the above teams.
How we’ll spend the money raised
After exploring quotes from numerous companies, we have chosen Total Play as our net installer of choice. Physical works required to undertake this work consist of:
•Installation of 2 Lane 33M ‘TP365’ NTP System
•Excavations and groundworks
•Remediation/imported soil contingency
•Training lines tufted into playing carpet
•PVC Skirt
•Batting curtains
The legacy of the project will be the nets themselves providing a long-lasting structure for the club and broader community to continue using for years to come.
