Shallal

RCN 1166404, Saint Austell

Shallal is a dynamic, pioneering, inclusive arts charity in Cornwall, aspiring to access and equity, with thirty years experience of running arts groups and projects in the community. We run ongoing groups for people to develop their own creative journey with us over the long term and to work collaboratively with other artists. Our weekly groups take place in different places across Cornwall as well as online. We also offer one-off projects and arts residencies across the county with other creative organisations and our artists perform and exhibit in public. We promote, maintain, improve and advance education to preserve and protect health particularly by providing access to and involvement in the performing arts including the arts of dance, theatre, music, visual arts, film, costume, photography, sculpture, writing and theatre technical skills by a wide range of the community, especially those who need a supportive environment.

We believe that everyone in society should have access to creativity, we believe in equity and the opportunity to discover your potential. Shallal is person - centred  - we aim to collaborate with those who come to us, whether they are new to the arts or have a lifetime of experience, to share our creative journeys, and enhance and expand our creativity through exploring, collaborating and offering a range of opportunities. All of this takes money to keep it all running.

We have a limited range of gifts of Shallal poetry books, tea towels, and art prints, please direct message us at [email protected] if you would like one as a gift for your donation.

This summer we are in need of extra funds to enable our outreach programme. This is a highlight for many artists and performers in Shallal, engaging with the public and sharing our approach. "Many people join Shallal after seeing them at an event."

We have been invited to four Cornish festivals this summer: Mazey Day, Blue Light Day, Lafrowda, and St Ives Festival. We will have stalls, participate in parades, dance and showcase our fashion show artists and models. We also plan to create a new processional puppet for St Ives Festival.

Please donate to help us be out and about and be seen in our community.

This is what one of our artists said recently:

"I've never experienced anything like Shallal. It's so truly inclusive, fully accepting everyone for themselves and as they are, what they can and not what they can't do. Everyone gives and receives in equal measure. I feel so welcomed and at ease. I'm looking forward to rebuilding my life to have a more fulfilling future and feel that this will be a large part of it."

Since the beginning of the pandemic Shallal has stayed in regular contact with the artists that we work with, supporting them at home and running groups remotely. We’ve opened new groups, expanded and adapted our offer in response to the needs of artists and kept our remote groups going in tandem with re-established face-to-face groups. This has meant that Shallal has learned and grown through the pandemic, reaching more people than ever, which is a positive, but it also costs more to run. We have so many new ideas about how to make the arts more accessible and we know that creativity can make a positive difference to people’s lives. We hope you will support us in our goals!

Any donation however small helps us to continue to provide the following.

Currently Shallal offers the following accessible groups and opportunities that people can join:

  • Five long-running dance and movement groups across Cornwall including two performance groups
  • Online Zoom groups offering visual arts and dance
  • Shallal Sketchbooks for people remotely at home
  • Our visual art studio based at Krowji in Redruth

All our artists have opportunities to perform, exhibit or share their work with others.
