We want to bring you some amazing art and science at Manchester Science Festival 18th – 28th October 2018.

You might be wondering about our title - well when we started our project that was the number of lower limb amputations in the UK every year caused by diabetes complications. Wow that shocked us too. Since starting the project that number has risen and we’ll tell you more about that at the Festival. Diabetes already affects 4.5 million people in the UK and costs the NHS 10 billion pounds a year. It’s now reached epidemic proportions, in the UK and Worldwide, so we really need to take it seriously.

I’m Christine, I’m an artist and my Granny had Type 2 diabetes and I realised I didn’t know much about it. I was worried that I might get it. So I wanted to find out more and managed to meet the amazing bunch I’m now working with on the project. You’ve met some of us on the video and there are many more in the team.I discovered there are two main types – 1 and 2. Type 1 isn’t preventable, although you can do things to help manage it. Type 2 is preventable, in most cases, so I thought who wants to get a condition that’s optional? Not me. series of thought-provoking art-sci exhibits and events about diabetes, to be showcased at the Manchester Science Festival this October. We’re ready to go with animations, ‘meet the amputation surgeon’, sculptures, interactive events, the latest diagnostic technologies, installations and much more. Your donation will contribute to the cost of materials and equipment so we can create an 11-day extravaganza. Don’t miss this chance to merge art and science and improve people’s lives. We’re a unique bunch of artists, medics and scientists and we’re really excited because the Manchester Science Festival is the UK’s biggest science festival attracting 136,000 visitors in 2017. “Manchester Science Festival is proud to provide a platform to showcase and raise awareness of the vital research into Diabetes. Seven Thousand Feet prompts the public to think about the condition and its impact in a different and engaging way. We are excited to collaborate with Christine on her project.”

All we need to make the whole 11 day event happen is £17,500 funding to buy the materials, equipment and services to transform our ideas into an amazing reality. If we get more than this then we’re not short of creative ideas and we’ll be able to stage even more of them. We hope that you will want to be part of this new - art meets science - event which we believe will change lives. We hope that you will help us in whatever way you can and that you will come see us, and the rest of the Manchester Science Festival, in October. All our ideas are in place to create an amazing visitor experience and we’ll be mailing out exclusive updates to everyone who makes a pledge.

Scientists, artists, doctors, surgeons, students and academics are giving lots of their time free because we all care that the UK is experiencing an avoidable diabetes epidemic – we want to make a difference. Please help us, yourself and others to prevent this condition. It’s a serious subject but we want to make learning about it fun and interesting. We’ll have lots of intriguing exhibits and plenty of the latest technology for visitors to get their hands and feet on! There’ll be lots more detail, including where to find us, on the Festival website soon. https://www.manchestersciencefestival.com/

There are lots of myths around and lots of information from all sorts of places but we want to help give an understanding of how to avoid diabetes but in a different way. There are lots of leaflets and websites but sometimes there seems too much information and too much confusion.….we’re working together to make art and science tell inspiring stories and engage visitors in a way never tried before.

We’re working alongside Diabetes UK too – who 'are proud to support us’. They’re the leading UK diabetes charity and you can check out their website for information too:
