We need to send cooler bags to India to enable 200 of the most needy children with Type 1 Diabetes safely store insulin in the heat.
Despite insulin being around for almost 100 years, sadly, a sustainable supply is still out of the reach of many in the developing world. Karan (pictured) has type 1 diabetes and must inject himself several times a day to stay alive, without insulin, coma can develop within hours and death within days.
Karan's family, like many of the other children The Pendsey Trust support, cannot afford insulin as it costs up to 70% of their household income. Karan is now sponsored via our sponsorship scheme, which means his medical costs and diabetes supplies are covered and he is supported to go to school through our scholarship scheme, thus helping him become self sufficient in the long term.
The problem Karan faces at the moment is that now she has his insulin, it must be kept refridgerated. The temperatures in Nagpur, central India, will soon be reaching 45c and the heat damages the insulin, rendering it ineffective. As Karan already lives in extreme poverty, it is not possible for his family to buy a the additional things they need to help him keep healthy. The Pendsey Trust has gifted fridges to children like Karan, this is a one off gift that will keep on giving the gift of life to children like Karan and his family every day for many many years to come.
Many of the children at our clinic live in mud huts or other unstable accommodation where it is not possible to have running water or electricity, for these people, there is no way to keep insulin cool. Kindly, Frio UK have donated 200 bags to The Pendsey Trust, these only require a small amount of water to activate every 3 days and insulin can be kept at a safe temperature without the need for electricity. We believe this is a sustainable way of all the children keeping insulin safe and those who do have fridges now have the added benefit of taking insulin to school in a Frio Bag to keep it cool throughout the day.
We need to raise £250 to send these bags to India, this price includes insurance. Any money raised over this amount will be used to send the children to school, to enable their dream of a happy and healthy future to be possible.
The Pendsey Trust truly appreciate every donation, we sincerely thankyou on behalf of Karan, his family and all in both the UK and India involved with The Pendsey Trust. We can also assure that every penny donated goes to help those who need it, as we are run by volunteers and are proud to have no administration costs.
