Aim

We're working to get 10,000 packets of wildflower seeds to isolated people in Scotland during the COVID-19 crisis. Can you help us?

About Seeds of Hope

Seeds of Hope Scotland is a small not-for-profit initiative working to get 10,000 packets of wildflower seeds to people in Scotland who are vulnerable or isolated as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. We hope to achieve this by the end of May 2020.

Our aim is to create a patchwork of beauty, colour and wildlife this summer, during a period when everything else may seem rather dark. We think it could make a big difference to people's mental health, and hopefully bring smiles to faces.

And of course, all those extra wildflowers should give a helping hand to bees, butterflies and other wildlife, too!

Why wildflowers? Well frankly, they're magic. Unlike many other plants, they need minimal care and usually thrive in poor soils. They pop up against all the odds, and help feed lots of other creatures. They're beautiful, they're valuable, and they're survivors.

FAQs:

How will the wildflower seeds be delivered to people?

We'll be getting our seed packages distributed by established volunteer action and community groups who are keen to work with us, and who are already helping vulnerable and isolated people in their communities.

This will make it as easy as possible for our seeds to reach the right people.

It will also help us keep track of where seeds are being delivered.

Finally, it means no extra doorstep deliveries are occurring (the volunteers are already making deliveries for other essential reasons). This is important, because it ensures the process brings with it no added infection risk.

Each packet of seeds will be attached to a wee double-sided postcard, explaining who are are and how to sow the seeds:

What sort of wildflower seeds are being distributed?

All the wildflower seeds distributed will be native, non-invasive species. Most are annual species (though a few may be perennials) and we're focusing mainly on distributing 100% wildflower mix that will germinate and bloom relatively quickly, bringing bursts of colour throughout summer 2020. Many of the plant species are valuable to pollinators and other wildlife.

Are you a registered charity or other organisation?

No, this is a personal project, which I'm putting into action with the kind support of a couple of lovely volunteers who will help me package the seed for distribution.

How has this project been funded up to this point?

This project has been self-funded up to this point - fortunately costs have been much reduced by several companies donating their goods and services for free, or at a significantly discounted cost.

Where will the money from this crowdfunder go?

All the funds raised by this crowdfunder - up to the £500 core target - will go directly towards buying the remaining quantities of wildflower seed needed to reach our goal of 10,000 packets.

If we manage to hit our stretch target of £800, all the extra funds will go directly towards buying postage stamps and packaging supplies, so up to 400 people can request that individual wildflower seeds are posted directly to their isolated loved ones.

Every seed counts - and every donation, no matter how small, will be hugely appreciated and put to good use.

This project successfully funded on 16th April 2020
