The Prize
Maggi Hambling - Night Wave - Oil on Board - Framed dimension 37cm x 27cm
Maggi Hambling is a British painter and sculptor. She is best known for her expressive portraits and sublime depictions of landscapes and seascapes. Working in the tradition of John Constable and J.M.W. Turner, Hambling’s close-up paintings of waves also call to mind the suspended, detailed prints of Hokusai Katsushika. Aside from painting, the artist has made a number of public sculptures, including a tribute to Oscar Wilde in the center of London, and Scallop on Aldeburgh beach. Born on October 23, 1945 in Sudbury, United Kingdom, she studied at the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing under Cedric Lockwood Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines before attending the Slade School of Art. In 1980, Hambling became the first Artist in Residence at the National Gallery in London, and soon after created a series of portraits of the comedian Max Wall.
The artist’s works are in the collections of the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and Tate Gallery in London, and the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, among others. Hambling lives and works in London, United Kingdom.
The Cause
If Sea Link is given consent, it opens the floodgates to multiple projects coming here.
SEAS is promoting alternative solutions which use EXISTING BROWNFIELD SITES CLOSER TO LONDON.
Even though National Grid was given consent to build its substation at Friston which is crucial for any connections to the grid, it is questionable as to whether that permission was granted for multiple projects. It was only given at the time for SCOTTISHPOWER EA1N and EA2, both wind energy projects. These other projects are for transmission, not for energy generation.
We need to raise funds to enable us to make a robust attack on Sea Link and give us the best chance at the DCO Examinations. Defeating Sea Link is critical in terms of resisting future developments. In order to make a well-argued case we need to spend £100,000 to mount a professionally organised and targeted campaign to challenge and oppose the Sea link Development Consent Order (DCO) which we expect to be launched imminently.
With your help, we think we have our last but very best opportunity to save this wonderful part of the world from wanton destruction at the hands of National Grid.
