Laurence Edwards - Maquette - Upsticks - Cast bronze figure approx. 45 cm high
The bronze maquette sculpture is a ‘unique’ version of ‘Upsticks ‘ made especially for the campaign.
The figure clutching onto fallen twigs from the threatened chestnut tree standing in the path of National Grid's proposed development.
A 15 ft version of Upsticks is being worked on at the moment and will be unveiled this summer at Messum’s West, as part of a large exhibition of Laurence’s work to held there from the end of July to the end of September.

Laurence Edwards' critically acclaimed figurative sculptures harmonise the balance between man and nature. Cast in bronze using the lost wax process and often permeated with crushed sticks, leaves, seeds and grit from the Suffolk countryside, his work powerfully conveys figures fused to the organic world and comment on our increasing detachment from nature as human beings.
Represented by Messums in Cork Street, London, Edwards has exhibited in Europe, America, Australia and throughout the UK. Born in Suffolk, he was taught by sculptors Anthony Caro OM CBE and John Gibbons at Canterbury College of Art before studying under Philip King PRA, Eduardo Paolozzi CBE RA and Tissa Ranasinghe at The Royal College of Art. His awards include the Henry Moore Bursary, the Angeloni Prize for Bronze Casting, an Intach Travelling Scholarship, Royal Society of Portrait Sculpture Award, Freakley Prize, Society of Portrait Sculptors, Elected Member Royal Society of British Sculptors and The Macquarie Group Sculpture Inside Prize (for 'Up Sticks', 2014).
If Sea Link is given consent, it opens the floodgates to multiple projects coming here.
SEAS is promoting alternative solutions which use EXISTING BROWNFIELD SITES CLOSER TO LONDON.
Even though National Grid was given consent to build its substation at Friston which is crucial for any connections to the grid, it is questionable as to whether that permission was granted for multiple projects. It was only given at the time for SCOTTISHPOWER EA1N and EA2, both wind energy projects. These other projects are for transmission, not for energy generation.
We need to raise funds to enable us to make a robust attack on Sea Link and give us the best chance at the DCO Examinations. Defeating Sea Link is critical in terms of resisting future developments. In order to make a well-argued case we need to spend £100,000 to mount a professionally organised and targeted campaign to challenge and oppose the Sea link Development Consent Order (DCO) which we expect to be launched imminently.
With your help, we think we have our last but very best opportunity to save this wonderful part of the world from wanton destruction at the hands of National Grid.
