Sean Dolan’s GAC is fundraising to purchase a TM1050 Echo Robotic Mower, costing £19,797 aiming to improve sustainability at their club

Sean Dolan’s G.A.C., established over eight decades ago, proudly holds the title of the oldest Gaelic Athletic Association club in Derry City. Rooted in the heart of Creggan — a community within the Triax Moor Neighbourhood Renewal Area — the club serves a population identified among the most socially and economically disadvantaged in the North of Ireland, as highlighted by the Multi Deprivation Indices. Despite these challenges, Sean Dolan’s has flourished as a cornerstone of local life, providing sporting, cultural, and social opportunities to over 460 adults and children.
The club’s legacy is marked by resilience and achievement. In 2000, it became the first junior club to win the prestigious All-Ireland Club of the Year award, followed by the Derry Club of the Year in 2002. Its senior team made history in 2009 by securing the Junior League, Junior Championship, and Neil Carlin Cup. In December 2011, tragedy struck when an arson attack destroyed our facilities. Yet, the club responded with determination and unity. By 2023, a new state-of-the-art sports and recreation centre was unveiled, featuring a 3G indoor hall, multi-function room, and kitchen.
This development complemented newly built changing facilities, funded at over £700,000, symbolising a powerful story of renewal. Our most recent development has been the construction of a state-of-the-art gym which is available to the wider community as well as our own members.
Operating in a community with limited financial resources presents ongoing fundraising challenges. Nevertheless, the unwavering support of local residents—both financially and logistically—continues to sustain the club’s mission. Looking ahead, Sean Dolan’s is committed to long-term sustainability. Recent investments in solar energy have significantly reduced operational costs, and the club aspires to become fully self-sufficient within five years. This forward-thinking approach ensures that Sean Dolan’s G.A.C. remains not only a beacon of pride and perseverance, but also a model of innovation and community-led progress.
One of the most significant and recurring financial burdens facing Sean Dolan’s G.A.C. is the ongoing maintenance of our playing pitch. As a grassroots club situated in one of the most economically disadvantaged areas in the North of Ireland, every expenditure must be carefully managed. Yet, to ensure our facilities remain safe, playable, and welcoming for our members, we are required to contract external services for pitch upkeep. This includes regular grass cutting, surface care, and general maintenance—essential tasks that come at a considerable cost.
Currently, the annual expense for maintaining the pitch exceeds £7,500, with over £3,500 allocated solely to grass cutting. This figure represents a substantial portion of our operating budget and poses a real challenge for a community-based club with limited access to consistent funding streams. Unlike larger clubs with corporate sponsorship or affluent donor bases, Sean Dolan’s relies heavily on the goodwill and generosity of local supporters, many of whom are already facing financial hardship themselves.
Sean Dolan’s G.A.C. seeks to enhance its financial sustainability through the purchase of a robotic lawn mower, valued at £19,797. This investment will significantly reduce ongoing grounds maintenance costs, enabling the club to redirect savings toward vital youth development initiatives.
Our club serves a community facing considerable socio-economic challenges, including high levels of poverty and social unrest. By lowering operational expenses, we aim to increase our capacity to support young members through inclusive, safe, and enriching programmes. Additionally, our project supports local schools, disability groups, early years programmes such as SureStart, and local intervention programmes for disadvantaged youths.
We are currently working to raise £4,949 toward this initiative and intend to apply to Sport NI’s Olympic Legacy Fund for the remaining balance. This funding will help us build a more resilient and responsive club infrastructure, ensuring long-term impact for the young people we serve.

We’re raising funds to purchase a TM1050 Echo Robotic Mower at a cost of £19,797—an investment that will dramatically reduce our grounds maintenance costs and free up vital resources. With these savings, we can channel more support into the heart of our club: our young members.
Many of the children and teens we serve come from areas facing economic hardship and social challenges. By easing our operational costs, we can offer them more opportunities, better facilities, and a stronger sense of community.
Every contribution brings us closer to a more sustainable future—and a brighter one for the next generation. Thank you for standing with us.

Sean Dolan’s GAC: A Hub of Sport, Community, and Inclusion
Sean Dolan’s is more than a Gaelic Athletic Association club—it is a cornerstone of the Creggan community. While our primary focus is delivering Gaelic football to over 460 active members, spanning all ages, our facilities serve as a vital resource for hundreds more across the wider community.
To enhance our sustainability and redirect operational savings into community development, we seek funding to purchase a robotic lawnmower. This investment will reduce maintenance costs and allow us to reinvest in programmes that benefit both club members and external users.
Our facilities—including a full-size pitch, gym, indoor 3G hall, and changing rooms—are used weekly by our 460 members. The 3G hall operates year-round, unaffected by weather, ensuring consistent access to sport and recreation.
Beyond our membership, Sean Dolan’s supports a wide range of community initiatives:
• Education: Over 200 schoolchildren use our facilities during the academic year.
• Disability Inclusion: The “Tuned In” project supports more than 30 adults with learning difficulties through regular sessions.
• Early Years Support: SureStart delivers weekly classes for 40 mothers and their children in our multifunctional room.
• Youth Development: Our facilities host programmes from Trojans Youth and Community Group, Tristar Youth and Community Group, St Mary’s Youth Club (via their “Engage” initiative), and Na Magha Hurling Club.
In total, approximately 700 external participants engage with our facilities annually, reinforcing Sean Dolan’s as a centre for sporting excellence, social inclusion, and community development in Creggan and its surrounding areas.
