Seamoss Theatre was born out of many needs and convergences. Finding a surprising lack of small professional theatre companies to join in the outer boroughs of East London, co-Founders Jessie and Kit met while working as drag kings with Soho Theatre, and quickly a strong creative partnership fostered between them. Coming to theatre in very different ways, Jessie and Kit each bring multiple different skills and experiences to the table - Kit an actor, playwright, and director, with hands-on pub-theatare experience, and Jessie with experience in any task imaginable while working on fringe theatre in Tokyo, now an emergent producer in plays and musicals. Together they realised they had as full a toolkit as two people could wish to create work, not just joining projects. They also share a passion for new British theatre writing and a wish to make space, not just for their own work as playwrights, but for other untold and challenging stories.
We already have a rough plan of how we would like to develop the company - starting with a Scratch Night/launch gala in the new year, followed by an early-R&D rehearsed reading of Jessie’s most promising script, and advanced development of Kit’s most promising script. Both of these works reached final round of the 2024 PapaTango Prize and Kit’s work also received praise upon submission to the Royal Court in 2024. Jessie is also networking in a producer capacity to bring in new and exciting creatives, whether a script, performer, designer, etc, and the first Scratch Night will serve this dual purpose.
