Supporting the vital protection of seagrass in Brixham, Devon.
WHY SEAGRASS MATTERS
In the UK, we’ve already lost over 90% of our seagrass beds - one of the most important and under appreciated ecosystems in the ocean.
Seagrass is a powerhouse:
🌿It stores up to 35x more carbon than tropical rainforests
🐟Provides nursery grounds for many species of fish and other marine life
🪸In Devon, they’re home to protected species like the short-snouted seahorse
Brixham’s Fishcombe Cove is one of the few places in Devon where seagrass thrives - but we need to learn more to protect it. Our team has already identified three key sites: Fishcombe Cove, Breakwater Beach, and Shoalstone Beach to commit to regular dives over 5 years to investigate and monitor the seagrass.

With your help, we’ll build the case to turn Fishcombe Cove, Brixham into a Voluntary No Take Zone - stopping the damage, supporting biodiversity and allowing nature to recover, while working with local fishers and our community to ensure shared benefits and regenerate our local community ensuring sustainable long term outcomes.

Founded by grassroots, community heroes and experienced conservation educators and divers, Chris Thomas and Duncan Kenny, the team is passionate about turning local knowledge and love for the sea into real-world conservation outcomes.

Through innovative, hands-on learning, citizen science and coastal community engagement, Discover the Cove works to inspire action for the ocean - starting in their local community.

DEVON ENVIRONMENT FOUNDATION
This project is supported by the Devon Environment Foundation as part of DEF’s mission to restore nature across Devon.
Devon Environment Foundation has the vision of at least 30% of Devon ‘for nature’ by 2030.
We implement the vision by supporting grassroots projects that regenerate nature, especially those that can be replicated and scaled across the county.
We strongly believe that supporting local grassroots environmental groups like the 'The Cove Discovery Project' can make a positive impact and bring about long-lasting change.
