Who We Are:

Archaeology Scotland is a Scottish charity that has been in existence now for 75 years and leading the way in using archaeology to reach out to diverse groups including young people living in or leaving care; young carers; vulnerable women and those facing homelessness to name but a few of the groups we work with.  Our ethos at Archaeology Scotland is that archaeology should be a benefit to society and inclusive and available to all.

By using archaeology as a hook we have been able to engage and connect people with their heritage and identity, raising aspirations for work and further learning, improving skills, well-being and mental health.

We are directly involved in numerous successful events all across Scotland where we have provided successful exhibitions and activities such as Dig Pits, Historic Writing, Clay Pot Making, Grinding Quern Stone and Artefact Handling. We were also invited to erect a permanent ‘Standing Stone’ at The Royal Highland Show in 2017, where children have carved their initials on it for posterity.  Over 4000 children and young people were engaged in our activities last year.

You are Invited!

As part of our 75th anniversary celebrations we are planning a special family orientated free event for the public to enjoy - the Scottish Living History Festival. This interactive, fun-filled and educational event will take place on Saturday, 31st August 2019 in the amazing Callendar House museum and outside in its wonderful designed landscape in Falkirk. The Provost of Falkirk has agreed to open the event. Also present will be our patron, Professor Dame Sue Black, and Georgia Hirst one of the stars of Vikings, the much acclaimed History Channel TV series.

We will have a full day of interactive hands-on activities such as:

  • Digital experiences (such as recreating archaeological sites in Minecraft and experiencing the world of the Vikings through Virtual Reality)
  • Simulated excavations
  • Ancient writing
  • Period musicians
  • Exploring and sorting artefacts
  • Engaging talks from experts (with links to Game of Thrones and Outlaw King)
  • Ancient craft workshops
  • Re-enactment groups including the Antonine Guard and the Galloway Longfhada Vikings
  • Guided walks with heritage professionals
  • And so much more!

Stalls featuring leather working, jewellery making, kilt making, iron smelting, promotion of artisan crafts, local high quality food vendors, and much more will entice people to enjoy this free day of fun! We also plan to create a replica Roman milestone where participants can try out stone carving under expert supervision - this will be a permanent legacy from the weekend.

Why This Is Important:

The Scottish Living History Festival will bring together all our skills in outreach and engagement to make this a memorable day of history, heritage and archaeology. The event coincides with the Gladiators exhibition at Callendar House and we see this as being complementary to our event by encouraging people to visit their local museum and park. We are hoping to promote the local area and people, who will be able to showcase their work as we bring together experts, artisan crafters, and passionate re-enactors of history and heritage educators who encourage an interest in Scotland’s rich past in people of all ages.

How Your Donations Help:

All your donations will assist us in every aspect of hosting this event! We are a registered charity in Scotland and as such our budget is quite restrictive. While we have raised 25% of the overall costs we are asking the community to help us put on this amazing festival to be enjoyed by all! For example £300.00 would completely cover the cost of renting Callendar House for the day which will hold a majority of our talks/workshops/ and our celebrity Q&A session and meet and greet. £500.00 would cover the cost for our Antonine Guard re-enactment group, or help provide first aid cover for the event, or help cover the cost of rented portable toilets for the day. The smallest amount can go a long way and we appreciate every single donation! We want this event to be an amazing time for families to spend quality time together, in an interactive environment, while promoting Scotland's amazing history, heritage, and archaeology
