With the help of her therapist, Antonia must find out why she has developed an extreme obsession with circles before it's too late.

by Emma Moffat in London, Greater London, United Kingdom

THE STORY

SCOPE is a psychological thriller short film set in the 1970s. The film follows Antonia, who struggles with an extreme form of OCD which means that she fixates on circles in every day life. She stares at them in fabric patterns, food, plates, mugs, clocks, ashtrays, picture frames, vinyl records etc. When she goes to see a therapist for treatment we learn more about what is behind this debilitating obsession...

Written from personal experiences, this film intends to emulate the feeling of having OCD and being at the mercy of your own brain. This fits perfectly within the thriller genre, and with it's period setting, it is intended to be a beautiful nightmare...

CREATIVE APPROACH

Through the film we will see the world through the eyes of Antonia who becomes increasingly obsessed with circles. We are driven mad by her life only being presented in a centralised, circular composition.

Every frame of this film has a circle at the centre of it, in the form of a prop, costume design, production design or lighting.

WHAT WE NEED FUNDING FOR:

The total budget for SCOPE is £21,000 and we have managed to raise £11,000 so far with the generous support from WDM Entertainment, Primetime Network, CineCircle (fittingly!) and private funding. With your help, we aim to raise the full amount required to shoot the film and complete post production (editing, music, grade and finishing). We envisage a 2 day shoot with two actors in one location. As the film is set in the 1970s, we have found the perfect location and will use funds to hire it alongside some stunning 70s props and costumes.

THE TEAM

WRITER & DIRECTOR

1724169487_rickheadshotcircle.001_15.png

Emma Moffat (She/Her) is a Cumbrian Writer/Director particularly interested in dynamic stories from the past. Her short film A BATTLE IN WATERLOO, starring Oscar Nominee Jessie Buckley, won the Bumble Female Film Force fund in 2018 and played at several Oscar and BAFTA qualifying festivals in 2019/2020 including BFI Flare, HollyShorts, Santa Barbara and Underwire. She has worked in VFX for 14 years working on films such as SKYFALL and SPECTRE and was Christopher McQuarrie’s assistant on MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - FALLOUT. Following this experience Emma intends to make her own female-led espionage thrillers, and SCOPE was born out of her research on the Cold War mind-control programmes and will showcase her creative flair and directorial style.

PRODUCERS

1724168750_rickheadshotcircle.001_8.png

Kristina Pringle (She/They) is a Taiwanese film producer who works across narrative and commercial projects. Her aim within her narrative work is to fill the frame with colour, heart and meaning, with a focus on projects led by diverse voices. With a background in commercial short form production, Kristina has delivered a variety of projects with budgets ranging from £10k to £30k. Her films have screened at numerous BIFA qualifying festivals, including her debut short animation RICE BALL that was screened at last year’s edition of the BFI London Film Festival.

Samantha Locock (She/They) is a producer specialising in an array of short forms including narrative, corporate, music promo and podcasts. She loves to produce human stories, particularly championing women on screen which is why she was drawn to Scope as it has strong female characters. Samantha recently co-produced an Art Fund funded short film with Kristina, and produced one of five films made as part of the BFI x BMW Filmmaking Challenge that was mentored by Michaela Cole which had a screening at London Film Festival. One of her previous shorts was nominated for best UK Short at the BIFA qualifying Wimbledon International Short Film Festival in 2022.
