Aim

Our aim is raise funds to secure the future of the Railway Inn as a community hub and music venue.

Save The Railway Inn – Winchester’s Only Grassroots Music Venue

Well, here it is. The post we never wanted to write.

The Railway is in serious trouble—and if we don’t raise some urgent funds, we could be forced to shut our doors for good.

We’re Winchester’s only grassroots music venue. For over 40 years, we’ve been a home for live music in all its beautiful, messy, sweaty glory. Local bands, rising stars, absolute legends, weird art stuff, noisy stuff, funny stuff—it all happens here. And we want to keep it that way.

But right now, we need your help.

What’s Going On?

Like most independent venues, we took a massive hit during COVID. We survived the lockdowns, cancellations, and years of reduced capacity—but we didn’t come out unscathed.

We’re still carrying a chunk of debt from that time—rents that didn’t stop, bills that piled up, and overheads we had to cover just to make sure there was still a Railway to come back to.

We’ve chipped away at it as best we can. We’ve cut costs, booked smarter, hustled harder. But the truth is: we’re not struggling because we’re failing—we’re struggling because we’re still dragging the ghost of 2020 behind us.

That’s what this Crowdfunder is for.

What We’re Asking For (and Why It Matters)

We’re aiming to raise at least £35,000 to pay off the last of that COVID-era debt in one go. A clean slate. No more monthly repayments draining the coffers. No more panic every time a lightbulb blows.

Once that’s done, we can finally breathe again. We can run sustainably, book more shows, invest in the space, and stop firefighting.

In short: we can get back to actually being a music venue—not just a stressed-out juggling act.

Where Your Money Goes

Every penny will go toward:

  • Clearing old rent and utility arrears
  • Covering backdated overheads
  • Fixing vital kit (currently held together with gaffa tape and hope)

We’re not trying to build a rooftop bar or install fancy toilets. This is about levelling the playing field—so we can just do what we do best.

What Happens If We Do It?

If we hit this target, The Railway is secure.

This is the final hurdle. Without that debt dragging us down, we can finally move forward—and we’ve got big plans:

Community-Led Programming

With some breathing room, we’ll relaunch and expand community events: inclusive gigs, youth programmes, open mics, workshops, and more. We want this space to work for everyone.

Aiming for Community Ownership

Long-term, we’re working toward something even bigger: community ownership of The Railway. It won’t happen overnight, but this campaign is the first step in building a venue that belongs to the people who love it.

We’ve got the team. We’ve got the community. We’ve got the fight. We just need a fair chance.

How You Can Help

🎟️ Donate what you can – £5, £50, £500—it all makes a difference.
📣 Share this campaign – Tell your mates, old gig buddies, and anyone who loves live music.
🍻 Come to a show – Yep, we’re still open! Turn up and be part of the atmosphere.

Final Word (Before We Get Soppy)

The Railway isn’t just a venue. It’s a launchpad. A haven. A slightly scruffy, sweaty, unforgettable part of Winchester’s creative soul.

If you’ve ever played here, danced here, crowd-surfed, cried, or fallen in love here—we’re asking for your help to keep that going.

Let’s not let it become another “remember when…”

With love (and earplugs),

The Railway Team ❤️
