The Vortex is fighting for survival & we need your help. Support will enable us to survive closure due to Covid-19 & keep our venue
by Vortex Jazz Club in London, England, United Kingdom
On the 2nd December 2020 we'd raised £44,655 with 803 supporters in 220 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.
We have been blown away by your generosity to date. We are determined that Vortex will not only survive this period of unprecedented closure but also come out of it stronger, more innovative, and more financially resilient.
£60,000 will enable us to stay afloat for a further three months - keeping our wonderful, loyal team in work; enabling us to pay our rent so that we can have a venue to return to. That's £650 per day we need to raise.
Vortex Jazz is more than a venue; it is a vibrant community of volunteers, musicians, punters, sound engineers, piano-tuners, programmers, musicians and venue managers. It's a vibrant community where people start out their careers, try out new things on stage, and celebrate.
It's where students play final exam gigs, where semi-professional big-bands proudly play to friends and family. We are a listening club, where established musicians can try out new material and take risks. We are more than just a music venue, we are a place where precious memories are created.
We are planning to build our digital capability so that we can stream our considerable archive of recorded gigs, as well as enable us to live-stream close-door gigs. We want to ensure that the public can continue to listen to high-quality jazz whilst building a vital bridge between musicians who are financially struggling and our audiences.
Musicians will receive half of what we make through live-streamed gigs, so our survival also helps to sustain musicians' livelihoods.
We will:
- Purchase the equipment for us to commence streaming of closed-door gigs and also launch our considerable archive of past gigs, so the world can be kept alive with amazing jazz. Streaming will help us to develop the financial resilience to sustain ourselves through this unprecedented period and move into a digitally-enabled future. It will also enable us to programme and pay musicians - helping them also to stay financially afloat.
Please give generously, so that we can keep our community alive.

The Vortex is fighting for survival and we need your help.
After more than 30 years as one of the most important live Jazz venues in the world, Vortex needs your help to survive. Like so many other venues, we’ve been forced to shut our doors. With no income since March, no government support, and no rent relief from our landlord, we are literally fighting for survival.
Why we’re in this situation
It costs £20,000 a month for us to be able to pay our rent and cover our basic costs. That’s just over £650 a day. With no clear idea of when we will be able to re-open the club to a live audience and no associated income, we are completely reliant on the generosity of our loyal supporters and the public to keep going.
We need your help to survive this period of closure so that we can once again welcome you through our doors, smile, and enjoy great music together.
About Vortex
Vortex Jazz has been a proud member of the live music venue community for over thirty years, with a simple formula: great live jazz from emerging talent as well as some of the world’s best; low door prices and a team mainly comprising volunteers who all have a passion to give you, the punter, a great night out.
Over the years, we have hosted household names including Jamie Cullum, Nigel Kennedy, Amy Winehouse as well as artists of world renown in the jazz community including Aaron Parks, Craig Taborn, and Dave Holland.
And we also play a vital part in ensuring that talented emerging musicians have a place to develop their career and as a ‘listening club’ musicians can play to an appreciative audience.
How you can help
Help us to survive: please give what you can. You’ll not only be supporting Vortex, but also ensuring that jazz musicians can continue to have a place to play to audiences and earn a living.
