We aim to raise funds to enable The Lizard Chapel to be brought back into community use via our charity Lizard CATCH - registration 1215559
Following the closure of the Lizard Chapel in March 2025, a group of local community minded people formed a group with the aim of bringing the building back into community use.
The building is grade 2 listed, built in 1864 as a chapel, by local families, farmers and fishermen as a place of worship and community
It seats around 250 people, with excellent acoustics for concerts and theatre performances, whilst being adaptable for exhibitions, lectures and daytime use by local community groups.
Seating in the main hall is on the ground floor and on the first-floor gallery.
The secondary space, previously used for community groups, is an accessible space that has the potential for a café and the housing of a small museum for the history of the Lizard village and peninsula. There are kitchen facilities and a toilet.
Our vision -
Amongst arts, theatre and music events, we wish to facilitate local community groups in holding other events such as crafting, learning the Cornish language, and enabling all ages and stages to have an affordable venue in which to meet.
The challenge -
To raise an initial amount of £2k to assist with legal fees, then to apply for grants and other funding sources of around £200k to be able to make an offer on the building. Further funds will be needed to maintain and repurpose the building in accordance with community requirements, subject to graded listing consent.
