More black grouse habitat in the Borders threatened; 11 square km plantation proposed at Todrig, Selkirk

Volunteers with our Stobo Hope campaign have lodged a petition for judicial review, campaigning against a proposed Sitka spruce plantation at Todrig, near Selkirk in the Scottish Borders. It is believed that Scottish Forestry acted unlawfully in determining no Environmental Impact Assessment was required, seemingly to the benefit of investors.

The taxpayer backed Scottish National Investment Bank, set up by the Scottish Government (supposedly for the ‘development of a fairer, more sustainable economy’), is one of many investors in this scheme at Todrig. It is difficult to see how a 1,000-acre, predominantly Sitka spruce plantation that will destroy moorlands and unimproved grasslands is beneficial to local communities or ‘sustainable’. This scheme adjoins another proposed Sitka spruce scheme of a further 1,700 acres; if both schemes are approved, this will lead to 11 square km of near-contiguous, Sitka spruce dominated forest.

Please visit ‘Save Todrig from Sitka spruce plantation’ for more information and a video.

We would be very grateful if you could raise awareness of this Todrig campaign and consider supporting this, which we hope will complement other campaigns opposing plantations such as at Stobo and Warblaw Hill (in Dumfries and Galloway).

Thank you for your support and we will continue to keep you updated on Stobo Hope.
