Aim

The new Local Development Plan includes part of Speckled Wood for housing development. We need to protect this much-loved local open space.

1784714606_pxl_20260618_111905422-mp.jpgOre Community Land Trust is a charity originally set up to protect Speckled Wood, an urban woodland in a deprived area in the North East of Hastings, UK. The charity owns some land in the woodland (including Ore Village Green), but most is owned by private owners, or is unregistered. However, all of the woodland is currently designated as protected green space.

Under the new draft Local Development Plan published by Hastings Council,  a landowner is proposing to develop part of the woodland as housing, and extinguish the protected green space status. A consultation is currently underway on the draft Local Plan, with Ore Community Land Trust leadin1784714784_pxl_20260521_105347738-mp.jpgg the campaign to protect Speckled Wood and have the proposed development site removed from the plan. If this site were to be included in the plan, it would damage the integrity of the woodland, destroy natural habitats, and open up the possibility of further destruction of this valuable and much-loved local green space.

Ore Community Land Trust needs to raise funds to continue its campaign against the inclusion of this housing site in the Local Plan, as well as to continue its other work in the woodland, which includes recruiting volunteers to maintain access paths and steps, looking after a community garden, maintaining Ore Village Green, and holding various community events and activities, including a forest school.

For further details of or activities and campaigns see the Ore Community Land Trust website.
