Following in the footsteps of over 40% of London live music venues, The Silver Bullet in Finsbury Park looks set to close unless £300,000 can be raised by Monday 13th June. Since 2010, the late-night 200-capacity venue has been championing live music of all genres, hosting over 2,000 music events in its 6 years of operation and representing musical cultures from all over the world.

As well as nurturing the talent of local musicians in a range of Blues, Rock, Jazz, Reggae and Hip Hop jam sessions from Sunday to Wednesday, the venue has played host to some big industry names including Rudimental, Laura Marling, Lords of the Underground, Congo Natty, DJ Derek & Don Letts. The Silver Bullet also launched the career of John Newman, who worked as a bartender at the venue in 2010, an experience he credits as introducing him to London’s live music community.

Management and staff at The Silver Bullet are now fighting back against a corporate takeover as the venue has been sold to Goodman Restaurants (owners of the Burger & Lobster chain), who intend to turn the building into a bar-restaurant with no live music. Following uproar from the local community, Operations Managers from Goodman have agreed that they would be happy to sell the lease to the current management, providing the necessary funds are raised by Monday 13th June.

The venue is one of the few remaining live music venues in London with a 4am license, 7 days a week. It has consistently served as a pedestal for independent and underground music scenes, supporting new artists and providing a diverse cultural hub for the community as a whole.

The news of the sale comes at a time when music venues are getting more support from the government than ever, thanks to London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s determination to “save London’s iconic club scene… [and] make it more difficult for redevelopment to result in the closure of heritage and cultural venues.”

Co-Manager of The Silver Bullet, Anna Naylor said:

“The Silver Bullet is more than just a venue, it’s a cultural and community hub; an integral part of London’s live music scene. The Silver Bullet is a place where small bands can expect packed out dance-floors, and where big-name acts enjoy the rare magic of an intimate gig with a great sound system and a crowd that is truly representative of the diversity of the area. Our vision for the Silver Bullet is to continue its legacy as a venue which truly belongs to the community – musicians that are paid properly, drinks and door prices that are affordable and most of all, to retain the space as a projection of our genuine love of bringing people together to enjoy live music.

London has lost more than a third of live music venues in the last 7 years due to soaring rent prices, tough licensing scrutiny and private property developers. We are enormously grateful that Goodman Restaurants have offered us the chance to buy back the lease, but now we really need help from the general public. Even the smallest donation will help us to reach our target. This campaign would be an even greater accomplishment if it was successfully funded by the local community, as that is who The Silver Bullet represents.”

Mark Davyd from the Music Venue Trust, a charity who work to save small grassroots music venues said:

”The British music industry is worth £3.8bn. All that money starts when somebody takes their first step onto a grassroots venue stage. Without independent venues, new acts have no platform to perfect their craft, to build up fan bases, and to eventually fill the same shoes of some of the biggest names around today. “

The Silver Bullet are urging the public to get behind their campaign by signing the 38 Degrees Petition and / or donating to the crowdfunder site to enable them to buy back their beloved venue. Should the crowdfunder be unsuccessful, supporters can either apply for a refund or choose to donate their money towards securing another building, so that The Silver Bullet can live on elsewhere. The Silver Bullet are also still looking to hear from private investors.
