Every mother deserves a safe delivery and a taste of a dignified childbirth; Every child deserves a healthy start. But in many underserved communities in Nigeria, this is far from reality.
This World Breastfeeding Week 2025, Carelife Character Foundation is launching the Ibom Open Maternity (IOM) Project — a bold initiative to strengthen local systems and support over 5,000 pregnant women and girls and 2,000+ infants across 7 Local Government areas in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
This project aims to deliver rescue:
- Free clinical assessments, maternity evaluations, ultrasound scans, and laboratory screenings for pregnant women and adolescent girls living in slums and underserved areas.
- Payment of full hospital delivery costs, specifically targeting impoverished and vulnerable expectant mothers and girls residing in slums and underserved communities.
- Distribution of essential supplements (Iron/Folic Acid, Vitamin A, Micronutrient Powders) for at-risk mothers and infants
- Maternal literacy sessions for pregnant mothers and teenage girls.
- Antenatal/Postnatal Mental Health Screening & Counseling
- Maternal Support Circles (Peer-Led Groups, Family and community Support structures).
- Neurodevelopmental milestone assessments for children between age 0-2years in the slums
- Free delivery kits and newborn packs to delivering mothers and Kids.
- Training of community caregivers, skilled traditional birth attendance and primary healthcare workers
Our inspiration began with a powerful pilot in Ibesikpo Asutan LGA (Sept. 2024), where we supported Sixty-five delivering mothers in the slums. The joy, the tears, and the relief these women expressed made one thing clear — we must support more delivering mothers in the grassroot. - https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18VvQ64v8t/?mibextid=wwXIfr
