To stop the demolition of historic and treasured buildings and prevent the obliteration of the only park in the local area.
Thanks to the hard work of Save Our Stockwell, formed by three local resident groups (Lambeth Self Help, Stockwell Community Association and Bellevue Residents Association) and supported by the wider neighbourhood, our community successfully defended our homes and green space through a decisive residents’ ballot of Bellevue Garden Mansions. This campaign was rooted in a fundamental principle: the right of local people to self-determination and to have a genuine say over the future of their homes and community.

We stopped this developer-led regeneration proposal that would have demolished numerous existing homes and erased Rhodesia Road Park – the only green space in the area – including its much-used MultiUse Games Area (MUGA). This space is vital for the neighbourhood, particularly for children and young people, supporting physical and mental wellbeing, community connection and local safety.
So-called ‘regeneration’ schemes like this proposal are not isolated. Across London, similar projects have prioritised developer profit over community need, frequently delivering luxury and unaffordable housing while reducing social housing over time. These schemes often proceed without meaningful consent, placing intense pressure on residents and undermining trust and wellbeing.
In our case, Save Our Stockwell mobilised strong community solidarity, working alongside our MP, Lambeth councillors and residents from neighbouring streets. Stockwell Community Association, Bellevue Residents Association and Lambeth Self Help will now come together again to form a steering group to deliver the aims of this Crowdfunder and guide the next phase of community-led work.
With the support of a dedicated campaign manager, the Bellevue Garden Mansions ballot delivered an unprecedented result: a 94% turnout, with 77% voting No. This overwhelming rejection showed the power of collective action and was recognised nationally, with residents described as ‘Local Heroes’ in Private Eye.
However, the years of uncertainty, pressure and threats associated with demolition proposals have taken a significant psychological and physical toll on residents. Demolition is not only harmful to communities; it is also damaging to the planet. More sustainable alternatives already exist and are happening elsewhere – including retrofit, sensitive infill, and long-term community stewardship – which protect existing homes, reduce carbon impact, and strengthen neighbourhoods.
Lambeth Self Help has already demonstrated what this looks like in practice through ongoing retrofitting of Grantham Road homes to improve their EPC ratings, showing that upgrading existing housing is better for communities and the environment than wholesale demolition.
Our goal now is to ensure that what happened here does not happen again – in Stockwell or elsewhere. We want to safeguard this cherished area, protect a thriving South London community and help restore a sense of safety, security and hope for residents.
Save Our Stockwell aims to raise £2,000 to extend the employment of the dedicated campaign manager until the end of March. This will enable us to organise a follow-up community meeting bringing together residents, representatives, and allies, and to produce a detailed report analysing the campaign and making recommendations for and by the community.
