Aim
Save Our Cherwell is a coalition united to protect the River Cherwell from the growing threat of the illegal waste mountain.
Save Our Cherwell is a rapidly growing coalition of local residents, councillors, scientists, campaigners, farmers, landowners and researchers united by one shared purpose: to protect the River Cherwell from the ongoing threat posed by the illegal waste mountain on its floodplain. All are volunteers.
Together, we are calling for urgent, ring-fenced government funding—whether from central government, DEFRA, or the Environment Agency—to stabilise the site, stop further toxins from entering the water, and carry out full clean-up, containment, and remediation.
Our vision is clear: a safe, clean, toxin-free River Cherwell; a restored and thriving floodplain ecosystem; and a national precedent for strong, decisive action against large-scale fly-tipping.
Beyond immediate remediation, we are pushing for long-term ecological monitoring, proper restoration, and stronger enforcement to prevent criminal waste dumping from ever reaching this scale again.
Funds raised will go directly toward making the River Cherwell and its floodplain safe. This includes:
- Regular essential testing to understand the scale of contamination. Purchase of testing equipment, re-agent, and any lab costs.
- Cover specialist environmental expertise if and when needed.
- Ongoing admin costs
- Legal fees ongoing advice, representation, and case preparation through Leigh Day
Every contribution strengthens the campaign, supports public awareness efforts, and helps ensure pressure remains on authorities to act. Ultimately, raised funds will protect wildlife, safeguard public health, and move us closer to a restored, toxin-free River Cherwell.
