After 27 incredible years of passion, determination and love for the game, our world changed overnight. With the departure of our longstanding owner and director, David Hughes, the London Broncos face an uncertain and perilous future. His unwavering support carried us through the toughest times, and now, without his backing, our very existence hangs in the balance.
I propose gifting the money to the club to ensure we can secure replacement players to have a team to field next season and to help with the ongoing operational costs in the absence of a financial backer and whilst the club raises funds to be self-sufficient.
For decades, we’ve defied the odds, standing tall against the Northern powerhouses of rugby league. We've not only held our own on the field but we’ve also played a vital role in the growth and development of the sport across London and the South East. Our capital city is a vast and diverse sporting catchment, with untapped potential to grow rugby league beyond its Northern strongholds. As the only professional rugby league club in the region, we’ve been at the heart of nurturing homegrown talent – developing players from London and the South East who have gone on to represent club, country, and even Super League. Without us, that pathway for young, aspiring rugby players would be lost.
This year, we faced a battle we couldn’t win on the field – a battle imposed upon us by the league’s new rules, making relegation a near certainty before the season even began. This grim reality crushed our ability to attract high-calibre players and secure crucial sponsorship, leaving us vulnerable and on the edge of dissolution.
Yet, even with the odds stacked against us, the London Broncos fought. We fought not just for our own survival, but for the future of rugby league in London, for every young player who dreams of pulling on our jersey and for the growth of the sport across the country. Our city is a breeding ground for talent – and the role we play in cultivating that talent cannot be underestimated.
Now, we need your help. The future of rugby league in London is at risk, and with it, the chance to grow the game in one of the most exciting sporting cities in the world. We’ve implored the rugby world to stand up and listen to the injustice of our situation – and now we turn to you, our community.
