Aim: We urgently need to raise £10,000 – so that GIRES can continue supporting the trans community and those that help them.
For nearly 30 years, GIRES – the Gender Identity Research & Education Society – has stood at the heart of UK-based trans advocacy and education. We’ve built the UK’s largest free trans support and information network. We’ve created robust, research-backed training for professionals. And we’ve supported generations of trans people, families, and organisations through education, advocacy, and evidence.
But now, without immediate financial help, we will struggle to make it to the end of the year.
Even if you can’t donate, you can help us by sharing this Crowdfunder widely within your networks.
Preserving trans resources and history under threat
This is not just about us. Across history, trans resources have been lost, erased, or actively destroyed. Today, we are witnessing it happen again: websites are being taken down, healthcare information removed, and vital resources for trans people are being deleted from digital spaces in the UK, the US, and globally. Entire archives are disappearing overnight.
GIRES is committed to safeguarding this knowledge
We are one of the few organisations actively preserving decades of trans research, education, and lived experience – and making it accessible to educators, organisations, and the wider trans community for years to come.
At a time when trans people, their rights, their healthcare, and their safety are under coordinated attack – when funding is being slashed and supportive resources are vanishing – GIRES is determined to keep this research available and to build a stronger future. But we can’t do it without your help.
This is a pivotal moment. If we don’t act now, GIRES – and all the work we’ve built – could disappear.
Why your help is urgently needed
We’re entering a critical transition period. GIRES is restructuring and repositioning to meet today’s challenges – and to serve the future of trans and gender-diverse people in the UK. We are repositioning GIRES as a resource hub for trans organisations and individuals to draw on directly - making our research and accessible resources available to those who need it for education and awareness outreach. We want to provide trans support to charities, educators and organisations with the information from our decades of research and collaborations, to help them better support the work they do in helping the trans community.
But we can’t do that without your help.
Our immediate goal is to raise £10,000 to cover essential costs and stabilise the charity until the end of the year. This money is important in helping us to keep the charity going.
What your donation will protect
🔵 A unique legacy of research & resources: GIRES has collated decades of peer-reviewed studies, original research, and practical tools. Losing GIRES means losing access to trusted, trans-led, evidence-based guidance.
🔵 Trans Wiki: A free directory of over 250 trans support groups that enables them to promote themselves and reach trans people needing support and information.
🔵 The Autism & Gender Resource Directory: One of the most requested and impactful projects we’ve created – bridging vital gaps in care and information for autistic trans people.
🔵The Being Ready Project: Ensuring dignity and respect for trans people in death, dying, and bereavement – work that no one else in the UK is doing.
🔵 Legacy of Kindness Project: Capturing the historical documents and voices of trans and gender diverse people and their supporters involved with GIRES through the decades.
🔵 Accessible, inclusive training: Our training is unlike anything else in the UK – built by experts, tailored for professionals, CPD-accredited, and inclusive of intersectional and neurodiverse experiences. It's used by councils, the NHS, and major organisations across the UK.
🔵 A truly intersectional, trans-led voice: We work with and for the community, guided by lived experience and backed by evidence. Our resources are trauma-informed, accessible (including BSL), and deeply inclusive.
We’re not just fighting to keep going – we’re building something better
This Crowdfunder isn’t just about keeping going. It’s about re-positioning the charity and launching the next chapter of GIRES.
We’re re-imagining our position within the wider trans community and evolving into a research-based hub for other charities, grassroots organisations, educators, and businesses. Our goal is to empower others with the tools, training, and resources they need to build trans-inclusive practice across every part of society. Help us build a resource to support other trans organisations and trans-inclusive individuals working within other spaces.
We have a positive plan for the future – Here’s where your money will go…
Your donation will directly support:
