 New stretch target

The money that will be raised from this campaign will go towards essential maintenance and improvements of this historic club. With updates to the clubhouse by improving locker rooms and disabled facilities, creating a short game practice area to help introduce golf at a grass-roots level and get people into the game of golf, and in the longer term, acting on the centenary year course plan created by Jonathan Gaunt to bring Cavendish Golf Club more in line with Dr. Alister MacKenzie's initial designs back in 1925. Details of the centenary course plan can be found here: https://www.cavendishgolfclub.com/centenary-year-course-plans/

Cavendish Golf Club is part of Buxton’s heritage. It is a place that has brought joy (and pain) to many through its 95-year history. It attracts around 1,000 visitors (and increasing) every year and, as we all know, it ranks in the Top 100 golf courses in the UK. It is also a wonderful place to sit and enjoy a drink on the patio with a view that is unmatched in Buxton, especially when the sunsets.

Covid-19 has had a huge impact on the club with the closure of the clubhouse and the cancellation of all spring parties. The disruption to golf is likely to continue well into the summer. Throughout this period, even without revenue coming in we have still had to maintain the facility, so that when the restrictions end, we do have a course to play.

We are appealing to all friends of Cavendish Golf Club to help us to raise £25,000 to sustain the club through this difficult time.

At the request of the Duke of Devonshire, Dr Alister MacKenzie was commissioned to design and build a brand new golf course in Buxton, on land specially selected for the purpose by the Duke. In 1925 the resultant course, widely regarded as ‘MacKenzie’s Masterpiece’, took the Duke’s family name ‘Cavendish’ and the course has been delighting golfers ever since.

Seven years after creating Cavendish, MacKenzie was asked by Bobby Jones, to design a brand new course on a disused fruit farm in Georgia, USA. The topography of this land had many similarities to the land he had found in Buxton and MacKenzie adopted many of the same design solutions he had used at Cavendish. Although the project nearly folded owing to financial difficulties, the resultant Augusta National has become the most celebrated and exclusive golf course in the world.

Whilst most golfers can never hope to play Augusta National, they can get a taste of the challenge by playing Cavendish, regarded as the ‘Inspiration for Augusta’.

The original 18th Hole

The 7th hole has remained largely unchanged since 1925

The character of the 4th hole is still evident after almost 100 years.
