The Prize

> Simon, originally from St Agnes in Cornwall, left the county to pursue university studies and a career in business before returning in 2007 to own and manage a clifftop pub in Porthtowan. This return to Cornwall provided the opportunity to re-engage with his long-standing interest in art, culminating in the completion of an MA in Fine Art at Falmouth University in 2025.

>

> His artistic practice centres on the ocean, the culture of surfing, and the environmental sustainability of the surf industry. These themes were powerfully articulated in his Master’s degree exhibition, which featured a large-scale installation constructed from more than 350 discarded and broken polystyrene bodyboards. Repurposed into an eighteen-foot sculptural “wave of waste,” the work served as a striking commentary on the environmental consequences of the tourist-driven surf industry and called for greater sustainability within coastal leisure economies.

>

> This body of work, along with others exhibited alongside it, foregrounded the hidden ecological costs of surf tourism and advocated for more responsible environmental practices. The project has subsequently led to a partnership with Surfers Against Sewage, through which Simon’s distinctive contemporary Cubist-inspired style brings dynamism and colour to a modern reinterpretation of both surfboard art and the coastal landscape around him.

>

> Working under the social media handle @porthtowanfinearts, Simon produces paintings, objets d’art, and rideable surfboard artworks that have attracted significant demand among collectors and surf culture enthusiasts alike. This work has led to a partnership with legendary Cornish board makers, Cord, and their head shaper Markie Lascelles, to create unique surfboards as works of art.

The Cause

Sewage is spewing into our waters. Profits are soaring. And we’re the ones getting sick.

Raw sewage is being dumped into our seas, lakes and rivers on an industrial scale. While people get sick and nature suffers, polluters profit and the regulators turn a blind eye. The system isn’t just broken, it’s rigged.

But we’re not going to stand for it. Together, we can end the sewage scandal – for people, planet and the wild blue spaces we all love. We’re building a nationwide movement. Using citizen science and hard data to expose the truth. Taking bold, creative action to pile pressure on those in power. All to hold polluters accountable and get the lasting change we need.

All funds raised through this prize draw will be donated to Surfers Against Sewage.
