The Tunnel
Nearly 90 years ago Saltdean Tunnel was carved out of our cliffs with much blood, sweat and pride by the very men you see before you. As the ‘gateway’ to the beach and undercliff walk, it remains one of the defining features of the seafront.
But unfortunately, rather than being a focal point of pride, the tunnel has become increasingly tired and neglected.
Which is why a group of local residents is on a mission to put this right – and ensure that the legacy created by those that came before us is treated with the love and respect it truly deserves
The Mural. Cost for design, painting, paint and anti-grafitti covering - £4k.
Hand-painted on the south end of the tunnel (currently magnolia) by award-winning Brighton-based artists, SOS and Req, the mural will reflect the wealth of marine life on our doorstep. It will be on both walls and the ceiling so that the viewer will feel that they too are underwater. The image below will shows the main images on one wall. There will be lots more fish in the final version.
It will be created with weatherproof paint, complete with a graffiti-proof wipe-clean covering. At least five people in Saltdean will have the spray and special clothes needed to maintain the mural so someone will always be around to keep it looking amazing.
The New ‘Welcome To Saltdean’ Sign - Cost. £1,500.
Designed and created by local metal workers, this spectacular sign will withstand the rigours of the seafront, only requiring the occasional wipe down to keep it fresh.
This image is a mock-up. We have seen similar ones that the artist has created and, please take our word for it, they are magnificent.
The Community Noticeboard - Cost: £500
A new noticeboard will display information about Saltdean’s proud history plus upcoming events & services which will mean that people will no longer have to post their signs on the railings at each end of the tunnel.
The mural, noticeboard and sign will all be properly maintained by our team of Saltdean residents.
